Supermanis one of the most powerful beings in all of DC, fueled by Earth’s yellow sun and nearly invincible against most forms of harm. The Man of Steel’s speed, strength, flight, and heat vision make him a godlike figure among superheroes. Yet, despite this incredible power,Superman does have weaknesses, most famously magic and the Kryptonian mineral commonly known as Kryptonite.
The word “Kryptonite” has become synonymous with Superman’s only major weakness, butit’s Green Kryptonite specifically that most recognize as the substance that drains the Man of Steel’s strength, causes intense pain, and can ultimately kill him. However,Kryptonite comes in many other forms and colors, each with unique and often bizarre effects. While many types are harmful, some versions of Kryptonite can actually provide Kryptonians with some unexpected advantages.
6White Kryptonite

White Kryptonite is unique among the various Kryptonite types in that it does have adverse effects, only not on Kryptonians like Superman, but on all plant-based life. This includes Earth plants as well as alien flora. In the wrong hands,White Kryptonite can be weaponizedto decimate entire ecosystems. On the other hand,White Kryptonite’s ability to destroy plant-based pathogens makes it incredibly useful, as it can eliminate dangerous organisms such as harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
Superman has used White Kryptonite to fend off dangerous alien plants and heal himself from a variant of the deadly Virus X. Not long after, Supergirl contracted the illness, and Superman used White Kryptonite to heal her just as effectively. White Kryptonite was also used to eradicate an alien fungus threatening Earth’s vegetation, as well as to rid aliens from mind control.
5Red Kryptonite
Red Kryptonite Can Be Used As An Incredibly Powerful Weapon In Certain Continuities
Red Kryptonite is probably the most unpredictable Kryptonite variant, known for causing bizarre and temporary changes in Kryptonians. Effects have included transformation into a dragon, splitting into good and evil personas, loss of inhibitions, and most famously mindless rage. Red Kryptonite also has several different origins and composition, from a modification of Green Kryptonite to a completely artificial material, which contributes to its wildly inconsistent nature.

Despite its reputation for randomness, some forms of Red Kryptonite can produce positive effects. InSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow#6,Red Kryptonite is described as a psychedelic that produces vivid hallucinationsthat can be rendered true for Kryptonians. Hence, Red Kryptonite can be a dangerous gamble, as it can grant temporary upgrades, but also make the user’s worst nightmares a reality.
Some of the Red Kryptonite’s many absurd side effects include growing a third eye, shrinking to microscopic size, and growing an ant head. Most commonly, Red Kryptonite removes all inhibitions, which could lead to positive or absolutely disastrous results. Remarkably,Superman has managed to control the Red Kryptonite’s uncontrollable rageby sheer force of will. Blue Kryptonite Is The Bizarro Equivalent Of Green K
Blue Kryptonite is a much rarer Kryptonite variant than its green or red counterparts.In Post-Crisiscontinuity, one of the Blue Kryptonite’s primary purposes is counteracting the bizarre mutations or psychological changes caused by exposure to Red K. This makes it a valuable tool in Superman’s arsenal when dealing with Red Kryptonite’s unpredictable effects. Fortunately, Blue K doesn’t have any side effects on Kryptonians, either.
Besides,Blue Kryptonite is extremely harmful to Bizarro. In several continuities, Blue Kryptonite weakens Bizarro in the same way Green Kryptonite weakens Superman, causing pain and loss of power. This inversion of effects makes Blue Kryptonite a vital weapon for Superman and Supergirl whenever they face Bizarro or other Bizarro-type villains. However, it can also help other villains manipulate Bizarro into fighting the heroes for survival.
3Platinum Kryptonite
Platinum Kryptonite Can Transform Any Character Into A Kryptonian
Platinum Kryptonite is arguably one of the most powerful and versatile types of Kryptonite, as it has the ability to grant Kryptonian-like powers to any non-Kryptonian exposed to it.Superman once entrusted a shard of Platinum Kryptonite to Batman, who used it to fix Gotham Girl’s reduced lifespan and grant her permanent Superman-like abilities such as super strength, flight, and super vision. Curiously, though, Gotham Girl has rarely appeared to use her artificial Kryptonian powers afterward.
Platinum Kryptonite is incredibly valuable to heroes like Superman and Supergirl, as it theoretically allows them to create powerful allies with abilities equal to their own. However, Platinum Kryptonite’s rarity makes it nearly impossible to rely on. Worse still,the potential danger of Platinum Kryptonite falling into the wrong hands is immense. If a villain were to gain access to it, they could become a near-unstoppable Kryptonian-level threat or create an army of artificially modified pseudo-Kryptonians.
2Yellow Kryptonite

Yellow Kryptonite first appeared as a regular rock painted by Lex Luthor to manipulate Superman. For decades, it remained nothing more than a fake. However, a new version of Yellow Kryptonite surfaced very recently, wielded by a mysterious ally of Lex Luthor’s.The evil scientist Graft carries a yellow Kryptonite shard in his gauntlet and uses it to send both Marilyn Moonlight and Superman back in time. Yellow Kryptonite might be the rarest type of Kryptonite, but also one of the most powerful.
Yellow is an important color due to its relevance to the Sinestro Corps, representing the power of fear. However, Yellow Kryptonite appears to be unrelated, is extremely rare, and its full capabilities are unknown.
While its full range of effects remains unclear, the implication that Yellow Kryptonite can manipulate time means it could become an immensely valuable tool for heroes like Superman. Used correctly, Yellow Kryptonite could offer a method of controlled time travel. If explored further, it could become a game-changing element in DC stories. Of course, as is usual for weapons like these, Yellow Kryptonite could also fall into the wrong hands like Graft’s.
1Periwinkle Kryptonite
Periwinkle Kryptonite Has A Charming Effect On Superman, Literally
Periwinkle Kryptonite is just as rare as it is ridiculous. It has only appeared in the non-canonSuperman Family Adventures #9, where it removes Superman’s inhibitions.Instead of rage, like Red Kryptonite, Periwinkle Kryptonite makes Superman overly flirtatious. While it’s clearly a comedic twist on Kryptonite lore, it does echoRed Kryptonite’s random physical and psychological shifts, only with a far more humorous tone.
There’s little practical application for Periwinkle Kryptonite in combat, but it does help Clark Kent spice up his relationship with Lois Lane, at the very least. Compared to other types of Kryptonite, Periwinkle Kryponite is a treat forSuperman. Becoming extra-charming for a day is a much better fate than succumbing to Green Kryptonite’s agonizing pain or getting split into two people by the Black Kryptonite, for example.
