Mistbornauthor Brandon Sanderson has had his fans on tenterhooks ever since the explosiveending ofWind and Truth, the fifth and final book in the firstcycle ofStormlight Archivenovels, upended the entire state of the Cosmere. Even worse,he made it clear that the next set ofStormlightbookslikely won’t see the light of day until the mid-2030s, as his next main project will be the thirdMistbornseries,Ghostbloods.

Thankfully, Sanderson fans won’t need to wait quite as long for the newMistbornbooks to reveal how the world of Scadrial reacts to themassive change in the Cosmere’s balance of power. While they’re still a while off, they’ll be here before the next stage ofThe Stormlight Archive. And in his most recent Weekly Update on his YouTube channel,Sanderson had good news about his progress onGhostbloods.

Brandon Sanderson Is Already A Third Of The Way Through The Next Mistborn Book

He Confirmed Its Status In A Weekly Update Video

While the headline detail of the latest Weekly Update on YouTube —Sanderson’s new ice cream flavorat Utah’s small-batch creamery, Rockwell Ice Cream — certainly sounds delicious, what’s more mouth-watering is the fact thatthe author is already a third of the way through writing the initial draft of the firstGhostbloodsbook. He also threw a bone to fans of hisSkywardseries, which is now in the hands of his co-author Janci Patterson, announcing that the next book in that series is also about a third of the way drafted.

I’ll admit to being a little jealous that I live too far away from Utah to get a scoop of Brandon Sanderlanche any time soon, butI’m excited to hear that Sanderson’s keeping to his projected schedule for completingGhostbloods. His output as an author has always deeply impressed me, but I’ve also worried that it could slow down as his career continued. Thankfully, that doesn’t seem to be the case, ensuring readers get to enjoy plenty of stories by Sanderson.

This Update Is Great, But It Will Still Be A While Before Mistborn Era 3

Brandon Sanderson Is Planning To Write All 3 Books Before Releasing Them

Unfortunately, while Sanderson is on track with his plan forMistborn: Ghostbloods, that’s unlikely to translate to the books winding up in our hands any sooner. Inhis 2024State of the Sandersonblog post, the author detailed his roadmap for his numerous projects over the next few years, and that his plan forGhostbloodsis the same as how he handled the originalMistborntrilogy: he’s going to write and edit all three books before releasing any of them. See Sanderson’s projected schedule, outlined in his post, below:

Isles of the Emberdark

Stormlight Archive6

December 2031

If all continues apace, that meansGhostbloodswon’t hit the shelves until late 2028, with the other two books in the trilogy following at a rate of one per year. To be fair, he’ll also be juggling the next twoElantrisbooks, backstopping Janci Patterson as she finishes the nextSkywardbooks, and working on several other Cosmere and non-Cosmere projects in the meantime. With all those in the pipe, 2028 doesn’t feel so unreasonable.

There Are Still New Brandon Sanderson Books To Look Forward To Soon

Tailored Realities Comes Out This Year & Isles Of The Emberdark Is On The Horizon

Thankfully, for those who are concerned about going a long time without a new Sanderson story, he does have some releases slated for later this year.Isles of the Emberdark, one of Sanderson’s secret projects that got a limited Kickstarter-backer release in 2024, will be hitting general retail either late this year or early next, andTailored Realities— a collection of nine of his non-Cosmere short stories — is scheduled for release on August 09, 2025.

As much as I wish I coulduse Allomancy to speed up timeso I could read the nextMistbornbook sooner, patience is still a virtue, and authors deserve to take their time. Sanderson has always impressed me, not just because of his prodigious output, but because he takes the editing process just as seriously as the drafting of his books. Sanderson’s dedication to the craft of writing remains one of his most admirable qualities, and it contributes to the success of series likeMistbornandThe Stormlight Archive.
