These ceremonies usually serve as a celebration of a love story seasons in the making. After watching countless ups and downs, seeing them date other people, and multiple false starts, that one day is a reward for all the hard work and patience that the audience has put in.

Then there are the weddings that are fully planned and paid for but never happen. These tend to be between a main character and whoever was brought in to keep them away from their one true love. But,one thing that unites these events is just how fancy and elaborate some of them tend to be, considering a lot of these people are meant to be members of the working class.

7Pam & Roy

The Office (2005-2013)

Technically, this wedding did not officially happen, however, Pam explicitly stated that Phyllis stole all of her ideasat her own wedding with Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration. She mentioned the flowers, the dress and many other details that were copied, and the audience saw Roy book Scrantonicty so it all seemed to track. While the wedding is not overtly luxurious, it is still rather big considering Pam was a receptionist and Roy worked at the Dunder Mifflin warehouse.

The Office

Cast

This mockumentary comedy series observes the mundane and humorous daily lives of employees at the Scranton branch of the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company. It offers insights into office dynamics, personalities, and the eccentric behavior of both management and staff, depicting an ordinary workplace with extraordinary characters.

It was a pretty big party, and even if their guest list had been slightly smaller, there were still so many costs to consider. The floral arrangements were beautiful, and they were featured in the church as well as at the reception afterward. The venue itself looked big as well, and was fully decorated, and the meals also seemed substantial. The food from their canceled wedding was clearly not cheap since they both decided to keep it and freeze it after they called it off, so it goes to show that finances were definitely on their minds.

6David & Patrick

Schitt’s Creek (2015-2020)

The show explained that the grooms were able to afford their wedding because of help from Patrick’s parents and Johnny, which is the only way they were able to make at least most of David’s dreams come true. WhileDavid’s money issues were well-documented across all six seasons, Patrick’s financial status is a little bit more ambiguous.

While their wedding wasn’t overly over-the-top, despite David’s constant attempts to make his day bigger than they could ever afford, it still must have cost a pretty penny.

He had a business background, but after his one-man operation that he ran from Ray’s studio, he joined forces with Rose Apothecary, and the two were financially intertwined. While their wedding wasn’t overly over-the-top, despite David’s constant attempts to make his day bigger than they could ever afford, it still must have cost a pretty penny.

Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek is a sitcom series created by and starring Dan and Eugene Levy. When the Rose family’s business manager embezzles funds from their fortune, they discover that all of their money is gone except for one last piece of property - a small town called Schitt’s Creek that they purchased for fun years ago. Now forced to acclimate to an average, borderline impoverished life, the Rose family will attempt to make due with what they have while trying to revitalize the town.

The flowers were immaculate, and the tent they booked initially was probably one of the biggest expenses. His Thom Browne kilt suit looked brand new, and even though the townspeople of Schitt’s Creek helped with moving the ceremony indoors, there was definitely some money lost there. Not to mention Patrick had just bought a house for the two of them to live in, which must have taken up all their finances.

5Marshall & Lily

How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014)

One of TV’s golden couples,Lily and Marshall’s relationshipwas incredibly aspirational. They were each other’s best friends, and seeing them finally get married after that sad San Francisco blip was what the audience had wanted for a while. In trueHow I Met Your Mother fashion, the show teased it for a while and returned to it in flashbacks too.

There is an implication later on in the show that Lily’s father may have paid for it, although it’s not necessarily explored further. But, even if they did receive help, the whole lavish affair seemed very much beyond their means. Lily was a teacher, and famously crippled with debt, and Marshall was a law student at the time, and his family did not seem to be well-off either.

How I Met Your Mother

How I Met Your Mother is a television series that follows a father telling his children about his past. Released in 2005, it explores his experiences and adventures with four close friends, leading up to meeting their mother, as depicted through a series of flashbacks.

While the bride may have camped out to get a discounted dress, it was still clearly costly and must have been charged to one of her many credit cards. The venue itself certainly cost a lot of moneyas the historic Van Smoot house looks rather expensive, and decorating it couldn’t have been cheap, either.

4Ross & Emily

Friends (1994-2004)

There was a lot of detail put into this extremely fast-tracked wedding, from clearing the debris where the church once stood, to setting up a whole ceremony complete with candles and an aisle. The permit alone must have been extortionate. Not to mention the fact that it is a destination wedding, so it would stand to reason they would contribute to some of the travel expenses, at least for the wedding party. The reception where Emily spent most of her time in the bathroom looked very lavish as well, and hotels in London are not cheap.

Friends

Friends is a television sitcom that debuted in 1994, revolving around six young New Yorkers navigating the complexities of adulthood. The series highlights their friendship as they support each other through personal and professional challenges, encapsulating the ups and downs of life in a comedic and relatable manner.

It’s said that their parents contributed to the wedding, which is the only explanation as to how a museum paleontologist and an event planner were able to afford any of it. A honeymoon in Athens must have been expensive too, especially considering they were presumably flying back to New York. But, the fact that the marriage ended up being doomed anyway shows thatit was all ultimately a complete waste of money.

3Turk & Carla

Scrubs (2001-2010)

While both these characters work in the medical profession, they are far from being at the top of thehospital ladder. There is an episode where J.D. and Turk compete for extra work and nearly fall out over $100. Even on his wedding day, Turk is taking on extra work so he can get more time off for their honeymoon.

Considering the fact they might not have been drowning in savings, the extremely telegenic wedding they had, while well-deserved, seemed out of their price range. The shenanigans that happened during the day could also have contributed to some additional costs. Turk’s delay in arriving at the church must have extended their bookings substantially.

Scrubs

Scrubs is a Sitcom and Medical Comedy/Drama created by Bill Lawrence that follows a group of medical students throughout their daily lives at the Sacred Heart Teaching Hospital. The series stars Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison, as they work their way up from Medical Interns while juggling all sorts of hospital shenanigans.

They would also have been late to arrive at the reception, which may have impacted all the staff who would have had to accommodate for that. The venue itself was very impressive as well. From the florals and decorations, and even the size seemed substantial. None of that seemed to fit their budget, or lack thereof.

2Cory & Topanga

Boy Meets World (1993-2000)

One ofTV’s most beloved couples, Cory and Topanga are the definition of childhood sweethearts. Though the continuity on the show is not always reliable, it was clear pretty early on that these two were going to be endgame. WhileBoy Meets Worldstarted when the children were still in middle school, it saw them grow up and go to college. That is when the wedding takes place, andfor a couple of college kids, the event is nothing short of extravagant.

Boy Meets World

In this coming-of-age sitcom, Cory Matthews navigates middle and eventually high school, exploring his relationships with his friends and family and learning life lessons along the way.

The venue was bathed in flowers and packed with guests, all of whom had a full meal, and there was even a hotel room waiting for them. Eventually, it all turned out to be one of Eric’s hair-brained schemes, which they all ended up getting arrested for. It makes sense as there would have been no way Cory or Topanga’s parents would have been able to pay for it, and the initial ceremony was much more realistic and set to take place at the Matthews' home. They later embarked on a tropical honeymoon, which they definitely could not afford.

1Pam & Jim

Jim and Pam’s relationship was the heart ofThe Office, and they managed to overcome a lot to finally end up together. When their wedding finally happened, it had to be spectacular. The issue is, it was so spectacular that it verged on unrealistic.A destination wedding; it takes place in Niagra Falls and has a very large guest list.

Jim may have progressed within the company, but the pay bump wouldn’t cover all the costs and prepare for their baby.

The hotel they booked looked pretty fancy, and it involved multiple events, including a rehearsal dinner, all of which had to be paid for. Jim had also booked the boat trip in addition to the venue, the church, all the food for each guest during each event, a photographer, and many other things connected with planning a wedding.

While their coworkers most likely covered their own accommodation, their families and wedding parties might not have. Jim may have progressed within the company, but the pay bump wouldn’t cover all the costs and prepare for their baby. Office managers don’t make that much either, and it is unlikely they got much parental help, seeing as Pam had already had one wedding fall through.
