Diablo 4has just entered its eighth in-game season of content, and a major change was made to its battle pass system. The new battle pass, now broken up into smaller, individual segments called Reliquaries, has been met with a lot of ire from players, however.
Reddit userNice-Brief9261says, “Diablo 4 Season 8 is absolutely shameful,” blaming recycled content on the resources required to rework the battle pass system. Comments tend to agree, with one pointing out thatSeason 8 “has [fewer] free rewards and more recycled content.“UserITheDarkitect(viaGameSpot) posted a scathing breakdown of the new Reliquaries system compared to the battle passes of previous seasons. They specifically call out “the 500 platinum cut, and the supposed ‘freedom of choice’ that pretends to make it better.” Platinum isDiablo 4’s premium currency used to make in-game purchases, including the Reliquaries.

Diablo 4 Players Are Outraged Over Reliquaries Awarding Less Platinum
Only 200 Platinum Can Be Earned From Reliquaries
Diablo 4Season 8’s new battle pass system attempts to give players more agency in the rewards they unlock by organizing them into sets called Reliquaries. Players can purchase Reliquaries individually for cheaper than a full battle pass, or every Reliquary for the same price.Players can also select which rewards to unlock, rather than working through a linear track and getting them in a certain order.
A major critique of the Reliquaries, however, is the diminished amount of Platinum that can be earned back. PreviousDiablo 4battle passes could return 700 Platinum to the player, most of the price for the next battle pass, butReliquaries only award 200 total. The 200 Platinum is part of the free rewards, which is nice for players who don’t pay, but has nullified a major incentive for purchasing the premium tracks.

Diablo 4’s battle passes have come under firebefore, but Season 8’s Reliquaries have angered players even more. TheDiablo 4subreddit is filled with plenty of people lamenting the new season, with the Reliquaries a common point of criticism. UserJUAN1101called it “a disappointing step backwards,” and urged others to “vote with your wallet and your time. Don’t waste either here.”
Early Impressions Of Season 8 Are Not Great
Players Are Unhappy With Blizzard
Even aside from financial complaints, Season 8 is getting a lot of flak online.Claiming it’s filled with recycled content is a very common area of concern, and that content is frequently labeled repetitive in and of itself. Unfortunately for those miffed, Reliquaries were labeled as “Permanent Additions” inDiablo 4’s 2025 roadmap, so the new monetization practice may be here to stay.
Season 8, Belial’s Return, is set to run through June 2025, so there are unlikely to be any major changes to the battle pass or the content until then. The poorly received launch of Season 8 has put a damper on the game ahead of theDiabloxBerserkcollab, which is coming on May 6 (May 1 inDiablo Immortal).Diablo 4is approaching its second anniversary, and Blizzard clearly wants the game to continue for a lot longer, but Season 8 and its battle pass changes have thrown a serious wrench into player retention.
