Marvel just announced the upcoming seriesX-Vengers- a tie-in totheAge of Revelationevent. The series introduces a new Avengers roster containing several mutated heroes, and ledby classicNew Mutantshero Dani Moonstar, who has inherited Captain America’s shield.

In the recentAge of Revelation #0(from Jed MacKay and Humberto Ramos), fans were introduced to the Marvel Universe’s future. At this point, a disease known asthe X-Virus has spread across America, killing many humans and transforming the survivors into mutants. However, this world will still have heroes, asNew Mutantsheroes Dani Moonstarand Cannonball are joined by Hawkeye, Shang-Chi and Black Widow, who each now have mutant powers. The team is rounded out by a redesigned Vision and the Variable Man, a new take on Giant-Man.
Dani’s mutant power is to give her target’s biggest fear physical form. She is also a gifted archer and fighter, and made a deal with Hela to gain the powers of a Valkyrie.
Dani Moonstar is one of theX-Menfranchise’s most celebrated leaders, with even Cyclops acknowledging her as one of the foundational heroes of the sprawling X-Men family. It’s therefore no surprise that in this dark future, she’d be tapped for a leadership role, especially if iconic heroes like Hawkeye and Black Widow are still getting used to their new powers. Sadly, it seems that Steve Rogers and/or Sam Wilson haven’t survived the Age of Revelation,leaving Dani as the new wielder of the iconic shield.
Dani isn’t the first mutant to inherit Captain America’s shield - Cyclops' sonCable also inherited the shieldin the far-distant future.
While Revelation has promised a mutant paradise, his mind-control powers make this vow incredibly suspect, and his accomplishments are built on human suffering. There’s more work than ever for theAvengersto do, as a classicX-Menhero heads this new version of the team.
