Although the sequel trilogy is the farthest we’ve gotten intheStar Warstimelineon-screen,Ahsokaseason 2, not the sequels, will be the most important DisneyStar Warsstory.Details aboutAhsokaseason 2are currently sparse, which is typical of upcomingStar Warsprojects. Yet, there are some things we know about the new season of the show.

For one, theAhsokafinaleset up multiple fascinating storylines for the upcoming season, from the appearance of Anakin Skywalker as a Force Ghost on Peridea alongside Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren to the revelation that Baylan Skoll is on the hunt for the Mortis Gods.

Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker looks down upon Ahsoka as a Force ghost

These plot points, in addition to the announcements we’ve gotten so far, suggest thatAhsokaseason 2 will be an even more important DisneyStar Warsstory than the sequel trilogy, especially because of one crucial plotline the show seems to be setting up.

Ahsoka Season 2 Features The Return Of Hayden Christensen

As mentioned,Star Warshas maintained an air of secrecy aroundAhsokaseason 2, but some notable announcements have been made regarding the show. One of the most significant so far has been thatHayden Christensen will return inAhsokaseason 2as Anakin Skywalker. Because ofAhsokaseason 1’s ending, many had assumed that would be the case.

Yet, confirmation of his return was still exciting, as was the update thatChristensen will be filmingAhsokauntil October; in fact, that may have been even more exciting. Given the show is already underway now, this means months of filming for Christensen. Therefore,Anakin will likely play a major role inAhsokaseason 2.

Anakin Skywalker Looking Sad in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

This sets up some thrilling story possibilities for the upcoming season of the show, especially in light of how many more abilities Force Ghosts have been shown to have inStar Warsof late. With the sequels revealing that Force Ghosts can use the Force and interact with objects in the physical realm, there is so much Anakin can do.

This is also a major deviation fromAhsokaseason 1. Christensen had two roles in that season, the first beingthe World Between Worldssequences, in which Anakin gave his former Padawan, Ahsoka, one final lesson: live or die? Following that encounter, Anakin silently watched over Ahsoka and Sabine as a Force Ghost on Peridea in the show’s final moments.

This doesn’t just have implications for Anakin’s story inStar Wars, though. On the contrary,Anakin having a major role inAhsokaseason 2 likely means that one ofStar Wars’biggest lingering questions is about to be answered.

All Signs Are We’re About To Learn What “Balance In The Force” Really Means

In addition to the appearance of Anakin Skywalker as a Force Ghost, theAhsokaseason 1 conclusion revealed that Baylan Skoll is currently on a search for information regardingthe Mortis Gods, a trio of gods first introduced inStar Wars: The Clone Wars.

This trio comprises the Son and the Daughter, who represent the dark and light side of the Force, respectively, and the Father, who embodies balance in the Force itself. The latter is particularly interesting for Anakin’s story and the future ofStar Wars, as the notion of balance in the Force is a key aspect ofthe Chosen One prophecy.

The notion of the Chosen One was introduced inStar Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menaceand revealed that this prophesied being (so, Anakin Skywalker) was destined to bring balance to the Force. However, the prophecy did not clarify what that meant. The Jedi interpretation was that balance meant an end to the Sith, but the prophecy didn’t state that.

With the resurgence of the Mortis Gods, though, it may finally be time forStar Warsto truly define balance in the Force, as this was the very nature of the Father. Interestingly, inThe Clone Wars, all three Mortis Gods died, which also opens the door for a new trio of gods to be formed inAhsokaseason 2.

One fascinatingMortis Gods theoryeven suggests it could be Anakin who takes on the role of the Father (just as the Father wanted inThe Clone Wars), which would mean truly fulfilling his prophecy. Whether that is Anakin’s fate or not, though, it is clear that the Mortis Gods, and by extension, balance in the Force, will be revisited.

Dave Filoni himselfconfirmed the Mortis Gods' returnduring a panel at Star Wars Celebration 2025, in which he shared:

“The Mortis gods… that’s a thing. We’ll see. Watch season 2 when it comes out, you’ll get a taste of it. You’ll get a taste of a lot of things. It’s a complicated thing. It was the weirdest day [when] George [Lucas] brought that stuff up. I don’t know where he was going with that one, and then I had to figure it out. It turned out to be a pretty compelling episode. It’s a big mystery: the Son’s there, the Father’s there, most of the Daughter’s there. …But we’ll see, we’ll get into it.”

Thus, the core concept behind Anakin Skywalker’s Chosen One prophecy is evidently about to take center stage, and that will change Anakin’s story as well asStar Warsin general—even more than the sequel trilogy did.

Ahsoka Season 2 Will Define Anakin Skywalker’s Legacy For Good

Ultimately, this revelation regarding the Mortis Gods and the true definition of balance in the Force will completely redefine Anakin’s legacy in the franchise, and with it, the entire Skywalker Saga. This is especially true if Anakin does indeed become the new Father of the Mortis Gods, but even without that story arc, Anakin’s true legacy will be cemented.

From the original trilogy to the prequel trilogy, and even the sequel trilogy, in light of Rey’s adoption of the Skywalker last name,Anakin’sStar Warstimelinehas dominated the Skywalker Saga. Now,Ahsokaseason 2 may very well determine what it really means to be a Skywalker, which will even have an impact onStar Wars’upcoming movies.

Therefore, just with the return of the Mortis Gods and the likelihood that this will mean revisiting the definition of balance in the Force,Ahsokaseason 2 is going to become a pivotalStar Warsstory that has more impact than even the sequel trilogy.
