The cliffhanger ending ofThe Last of Us’ season 2 premiere sees Cordyceps vines snaking into Jackson, which could mean the infected are coming to town.The Last of Usseason 2, episode 1, “Future Days,” picks up five years after the events of season 1, when Joel and Ellie are fully settled into their new lives in Jackson, Wyoming. Ellie is a part of the patrol squad and Joel is the foreman of a construction crew trying to expand the town to accommodate some refugees.

During the construction, the crew breaks into a pipeline that seems to be full of old, dry vines. But at the end of the episode,it’s revealed that these vines contain some strands of Cordyceps, which start to wiggle just before the end credits.The Last of Us’ TV adaptation made some changes to the infectionin season 1. It gave the infected a hive mind connected through an underground network of tendrils, so the appearance of Cordyceps in a broken pipe is a very bad sign for the town.

The Cordyceps tendrils sparking to life in the pipeline through Jackson seem to suggest thatall the nearby infected will be alerted to come to the town and cause mayhem.The Last of Us’ zombie hive mindmeans it won’t just be a couple of stragglers that get the message to storm Jackson; it’ll be every single runner, clicker, and bloater in the surrounding area. In season 1, hordes were seen swarming the capitol building in Boston and the suburban street in Kansas City — and it wasn’t pretty.
