However, one of his upcoming projects is about to reach a very unfortunate milestone that will leave fans of the franchise even more devastated than before.

Costner’s western epic was filmed back-to-back with the first film, andHorizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2was set to release on June 05, 2025, only six weeks after the first film came out.Horizon 2did premiere at the Venice International Film Festivalin September 2024, butit hasn’t been released outside of that, whether in theaters or on streaming.
Now, instead of July 20, 2025 marking the one year anniversary of the sequel’s release, it’s a harsh reminder of the issues the franchise has faced. Not only can fans ofHorizonand Costner still not see the sequel, but there is no clarity about when, or if, they’ll ever be able to do so.
The main reason for the film’s lack of release is, as per usual, about money.The firstHorizonmovie performed very poorly at the box officeduring its theatrical release. The movie’s reported budget was around $50 million, andChapter 1only managed to earn around $38 million while it was in theaters.
While the reported budget ofHorizonwas $50 million, that doesn’t include the marketing and distribution costs, which could have brought the budget up to around the $100 million range.
Based on the returns from the previous movie,Warner Bros. has become very hesitant about the sequeland putting any more money into marketing and distribution.Horizon 2was pushed from its initial release datesoon after the first movie bombed. Yet, there has been no news about a new release date.
This is especially troubling considering that Costner’sHorizonfranchise was meant to be four movies, each one focusing on the same group of characters at different points in their lives. With the fate of the second film very much up in the air,it seems very unlikely that the franchise will continue further.
While the movie could come out with a big theatrical release eventually, the more likely scenario is that it will eventually be dumped on streaming without much fanfare or secure a very limited theatrical release. This could makeHorizon: An American Saga - Chapter 2the end of Costner’s ill-fated franchise, should it ever arrive.
