Sinners Opening Weekend Box Office Actuals Even Higher Than Projected

Per a report fromDeadlineon Monday,Sinners' Sunday box office numbers came in above the projected total, landing at$48 millioninstead of $45.6 million.Additionally, the film’s four-day holiday weekend is estimated at around $55 million after at least an additional $6.7 million on Easter Monday.

The chart below has been updated with the weekend actuals, and the article otherwise remains as originally written.

This total also means thatSinnershas earned the best-ever Easter opening weekend for an R-rated movie, handily besting the $33 million opening weekend earned by David Fincher’sPanic Roomin 2002. It has also earned the9thbest Easter weekend debut of all time among movies of all ratings, falling behind onlyFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,Ready Player One, 2010’sClash of the Titans,Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,The Fate of the Furious,Furious 7,The Super Mario Bros. Movie, andBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The fact thatboth the No. 1 and the No. 2 movies this weekend are Warner Bros. Pictures productionsalso means that the studio is back in good standing after the wobbly box office performance of their splashy Bong Joon Ho sci-fi movieMickey 17, which only grossed $130.6 million against its reported $118 million budget. See the full domestic Top 5 for the weekend below:

$45.6 million (weekend 1)

2

$40.5 million

$344.6 million (weekend 3)

3

$45.3 million (weekend 2)

4

$7 million

$27.3 million (weekend 2)

5

$4.855 million

$17.1 million (weekend 2)

BecauseSinnershas taken the top spot on the chart, this has caused the previous weekend’s No. 1 through No. 4 titles to each slide down one spot apiece. The faith-based animated movieThe King of Kingshad by far the smallest drop, seeming to take advantage of its biblical themes to rule Easter weekend by falling only 11%. Meanwhile, the Rami Malek action movieThe Amateurfell 51% while the Alex Garland co-directed A24 movieWarfarehad a reasonably slim drop of 42%.

The only title to fall off the chart completely is the Blumhouse thrillerDrop, which fell from No. 5 to No. 6 with a $3.35 million 3-day haul seeing it drop 55%, landing above the new anime movieColorful Stage: The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing, which is set debut at No. 7 with a $2.8 million haul, though it is only playing in 800 theaters. The only other new title in the Top 10 is the 20th anniversary re-release of the Jane Austen adaptationPride & Prejudice, which debuted at No. 8 with $2.7 million.

What This Means For Sinners

The Horror Movie Could Become A Solid Success

In addition to theSinnersreleasebreaking a record for Easter weekend, it has also earnedthe ninth best opening weekend for an R-rated horror moviein general. This includes outgrossing the debuts of everyScreammovie includingScream VI, which had the franchise’s best debut with $44.4 million and legged out to a worldwide total of $166.6 million. Below, see a breakdown of every R-rated horror release that has performed better than the new vampire movie and how much they made by the end of their respective runs:

This is good news for the movie, because it is under significant financial pressure due to the sizableSinnersbudget, which is reportedly somewhere around $100 million. Because movies typically need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in theaters to break even, thismost likely means that the Ryan Coogler movie’s break-even point is roughly $250 million. While this opening weekend does not necessarily indicate that it will hit that milestone, it puts it on track to potentially be a solid success, especially when combined with its eventual VOD release.
