Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcis almost here, and it’s going to change the manga in one major way. After years of anticipation, theChainsaw Manmovie will premiere worldwide this upcoming fall, and if the trailers and other promotional material are to be believed, it’s going to be well worth the wait.
TheChainsaw Manmovie is sure to be great, but unfortunately, it will differ from the manga in one key area. At MAPPA’s Anime Expo panel, MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka spoke about the difficulties of adapting the violent and sexual nature of the Reze arc, and shockingly, it was revealed thatChainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcmight tone down the sex and violence to be more accessible to general audiences.

I mean, Reze has a lot of violence in it, and there’s a lot of sexual expression in it. But of course, the movie industry has a lot of strict ratings.
I think what’s expressed in the original is something that I want to do as much as possible. But I also want a lot of people to see it. There are rules that we have to follow in order for a lot of people to see it.
So, in the middle of that, I’m trying to think of ways to achieve both. What’s done in the original manga, we honor it. But then, since we want to deliver this to as many people as possible, there are rules that we have to abide by. So, we’re sort of caught in between. But we do want to achieve both. - Manabu Otsuka
None of that will be outright removed, but it’s still unfortunate thatChainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcmight not get the presentation it deserves.
How Censored Will The Chainsaw Man Movie Be, Anyway?
What To Expect From The Chainsaw Man Movie
Even if theChainsaw Manmovie won’t be as graphic as the manga, that doesn’t mean it will be completely censored. In the aforementioned panel at Anime Expo, Manabu Otsuka said that he’s trying to find a balance between staying true to the manga and following specific rules put in place for anime, so even if the content is toned down, it won’t be unrecognizable.
All of that, of course, can be seen intheChainsaw Manmovie trailers. Not only does the action look as violent as ever, but things like Denji and Reze skinnydipping and the famous panel of Reze and Makima in lingerie are still in the film, so it’s clear thatChainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcwill still have plenty of sex and violence, even if it’s being toned down for general audiences.
Why The Chainsaw Man Movie Will Be Great, Regardless Of Censorship
No matter how muchtheChainsaw Manmoviemight get censored, that doesn’t change how great a film it will be. While the anime took a notably slow and methodical approach to its adaptation, the movie is going in the opposite direction and making things as bombastic as ever, resulting in action scenes with utterly gorgeous artwork and animation.
More importantly, however, is the story being conveyed in theChainsaw Manmovie, as amidst all the mindless action is a story of Denji having his first true romantic crisis, soChainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcwill be great for depicting Denji’s romantic troubles with utterly perfect animation to highlight every twist and turn. It’s exactly what people could hope for, and hopefully, any censorshipChainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arcsuffers won’t hinder it too much.
