Did You Know: Both director Edward Berger and screenwriter Peter Straughan met with real life cardinals to discuss the actual conclave process.

WithConclave, Berger takes viewers behind the scenes of one of society’s most closely guarded rituals: the selection of a new pope. Few know exactly what goes on behind the closed doors when the cardinals meet, and Berger, building upon Harris' novel, gives the religious decision a sharp political edge. Thoughthe process as depicted byConclaveis far more dramatic — and potentially even considered blasphemous by some — it has increased interest in the topic.

TheConclaveendingin particular saw considerable chatter when the movie was released in fall 2024. With its stellar cast — which also includes Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabelle Rossellini — and carefully constructed visuals,Berger’s film stood out as one of the strongest titles of last year. Now that another real life conclave is set to take place following Pope Francis' passing, it seems the movie will again step into the spotlight. It will also no doubt lead to a continued discussion over how accurateConclave’s plot is, making it the perfect time to catch it on streaming.

WhatScreenRanthas said aboutConclave:

Conclaveis not trying to be some treatise on the state of the Catholic Church, nor is it saying anything new about modern religion. It’s engrossing nonetheless, and it milks the titular event for every dramatic drop its worth. Watching actors like Lithgow, Fiennes, and Tucci chew scenery in some of the oldest buildings in the world is like a drug for anyone that loves character actors. -Conclave Review: Catty Cardinals Choose The New Pope In Riveting & Excellently Shocking Drama
