She Has Been Steeped In Controversy This Year

A brief synopsis ofTrinidadhas also been revealed. The movie focuses on the titular protagonist, played by Gabriela Andrada, who escapes persecution in 19th-century Spain and arrives in the Wild West in the United States. She develops weapon skills on her journey and also encounters enemies such as Gascón’s Bronson.

According to Gascón,Bronson is a widow and an “ultra conservative woman"who is akin to “a kind of female Darth Vader with five children to protect and manipulate.” The actor elaborates below:

“She hates immigration, even though she’s an immigrant herself, with deeply patriarchal values. She’s anti-feminist and opposed to social progress, although she has always been a fighter and has earned the respect, even as a woman, of the people who operate on a foundation of deception. A kind of female Darth Vader.”

Notably, it’s Gascón’s first movie sinceEmilia Perezand the controversy that ensued after. Though her role as the titular character was initially celebrated, she was wrapped in a controversy following her Oscar nominationafter old tweets from her resurfaced that contained dialogue construed as racist. She limited her appearances at award ceremonies afterwards but did attend the Academy Awards.

Those behind the film, including Gascón herself, have already spoken up to address the actor’s controversy. ISII group founder Silvia Carvalho da Costa, who is helping back the project, called her villain role “almost poetic” and noted that her personality “outweighed any past controversy.” De Costa’s full quote is below:

That her next role would be that of a villain seemed almost poetic to me, so it was a personal choice: her bilingual presence, the intensity she brings, and that ambiguous energy the character needs did the rest.

We’ve all been heroes in someone’s story and villains in someone else’s.

I know Karla: in addition to being a great actress, she is, for me, a great person, and that outweighed any past controversy.

Gascón added thatshe “can’t control the interpretations others make of [her].“She expressed wanting to forge ahead with her career despite the controversy. Check out Gascón’s full quote below:

I can’t control the interpretations others make of me or the things they say, often taken out of context, manipulated, or simply false. What I can do—and will continue to do—is demonstrate, through my work and my daily attitude, that I am not the person some have tried to project.

Gascón Is Getting A Second Chance

Trinidadwill give Gascón a chance to take on a very different type of role than what she did inEmilia Pérez. There is no word on the update and there is currently no trailer at this time.

On the other hand, the upcoming Western is a reset for Gascón following the controversy. Given the serious nature of her tweets and responses, it seemed unclear what this would mean for the actor’s future afterEmilia Perez. Gascón has seemingly been given a second chance withTrinidad, however, and has a producer who really supports her career.
