Cyclopsis famously the leader of the X-Men, and has been for quite some time, but it seems as though he’s trading his long-standing position for a new leadership role with theAvengers. Well, not exactly. But this latest development in Marvel Comics canon is probably the closest fans will get to actually seeing Cyclops lead the Avengers, and that alone is something for fans to be excited about.
In a preview ofThe Avengers#30 by Jed MacKay and Farid Karami, it’s explained thatthe Avengers are going on a mission to find the Missing Moment, and they need another team of heroes to protect the Earth in their absence. The Missing Moment refers to a mysterious prize that is believed to have the power to change the fabric of the Marvel Universe forever. That’s why the Avengers have to travel to different key points in Marvel’s history to find it, and they’ll stop at nothing until they do.

MARVEL ZOMBIES ATTACK IN THE RUINS OF SECRET WARS! The AVENGERS' hunt for the “Missing Moment” takes them to the last place anyone expected – the ruins of Hickman’s SECRET WARS! Where Marvel Zombies await! And while Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are away, someone needs to protect the world in their absence. Luckily, they know just the group of misunderstood mutants… Featuring: THE X-MEN!

While the fact that the Avengers are traveling to a zombie-infested Battleworld in search of the Missing Moment (as this preview implies) is exciting by itself, arguably the main standout of this preview is that Cyclops will lead the ‘Avengers’ on Earth in their absence. Not only that, but the X-Men have become something of an honorary Avengers team while the main team is away, making this upcoming book even more exciting than it was already.
Marvel Finally Found a Way to Get Cyclops in the Avengers
Not only does this upcoming adventure promise to be incredibly fun, but it also marks a major milestone for Cyclops as a character. Cyclops has never been in the Avengers before, and he’s certainly never been the team’s leader. The main reason is that Cyclops genuinely has never had the time.
Cyclops has been the leader of the X-Mensince he was a teenager, and during the mutants' time on Krakoa, Cyclops doubled down on his leadership role for the sake of not just the X-Men, but all mutantkind. Now, Cyclops is even busier with the X-Men than he’s ever been before, as he’s pulling them up ‘from the ashes’ of the fallen Krakoa.
However, Marvel found the perfect way to finally get Cyclops in the Avengers: by making the X-Men honorary Avengers.
Cyclops and The Avengers Haven’t Always Gotten Along
While it’s true that Cyclops has previously been too busy to join the Avengers, that’s not the only reason he’s never joined the team. Truth be told, there’s no love lost between Cyclops and the Avengers, especially after theAvengers vs X-Menevent. Cyclops would much rather ensure that his X-Men are safe under his leadership than go join a team that has a checkered history with the X-Men.
But, now that the X-Men are filling the role of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes while the Avengers are off-world, Cyclops is free to finally lead his most ideal version of the Avengers. Sure, the X-Men aren’t actually becoming the Avengers in this new comic so much as they are promising to keep the world safe in the Avengers' absence, but that’s just a technicality.
In every way that matters, the X-Men are temporarily going to be the new Avengers, and Cyclops is going to lead them, which is about as close as fans are going to get to seeingCyclopsjoining theAvengers.
