Ed Boon recently revealed the twoMortal Kombatcharacters he would like to see in a futureSuper Smash Bros.game. WhileSuper Smash Bros.began as a crossover that pittedNintendo’s various iconic mascotsagainst each other, it has since evolved into a celebration of gaming as a whole with iconic characters from other companies joining in the series’ platforming-based brawling action. The multiverse-hopping fun started with the additions of Sonic the Hedgehog andMetal Gear Solid’s Solid Snake in 2007’sSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, and later installments would see guest appearances fromBanjo-Kazooie,Street Fighter,Final Fantasy 7,Tekken, and evenKingdom Hearts.
Naturally, fans have shared their own ideas about which classic video game characters should be the next to joinSuper Smash Bros’ ever-expanding roster of beloved mascots. One of themost common choices is Crash Bandicoot, but other popular suggestions include some very unlikely options like Travis Touchdown fromNo More Heroes, Master Chief fromHalo, and even Dante fromDevil May Cry. These characters might seem a bit too violent for Nintendo’s typically family-friendly fare, but the inclusion of Bayonetta fromSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii Uonward is proof that nothing is truly off the table when it comes to newSmashfighters.

Enter Ed Boon, the co-creator ofMortal Kombatand creative director of NetherRealm Studios. Speaking with Axios earlier this week, Boon revealed that while Nintendo hasn’t approached him for a possible crossover betweenMortal KombatandSuper Smash Bros, he would be more than open to the idea. When asked which ofMK’s collection of playable fighters he would like to see inSmash, Boon quickly answered with Scorpion and Sub-Zero. He says that the rival ninjas would be “instantly identifiable visually” and that he would like to see Scorpion pull his signature spear move inSuper Smash Bros.
Boon has said that he would like to seeScorpion appear inSuper Smash Bros.in the past, and his choice shouldn’t be that much of a surprise to longtimeMortal Kombatfans. Scorpion is seen by many to be the face of theMKfranchise, and Ed Boon has stated on multiple occasions that the undead ninja assassin is his favorite character. Sub-Zero wouldn’t be far behind, as the ice-wielding warrior of the Lin Kuei clan has a long and storied rivalry with Scorpion stretching back to the originalMortal Kombatgame. Both ninjas have appeared in other games, with their most recent outings being NetherRealm’sInjusticeseries.
Scorpion and Sub-Zero’s legendary feudis about to reach a new chapter in the upcomingMortal Kombat 1, which sees the former enemies become allies in Liu Kang’s rebooted timeline. However, should Nintendo ever give Ed Boon the offer to featureMortal Kombatcharacters inSuper Smash Bros, the players could see these iconic ninja warriors battle against other popular gaming mascots in a presumably less bloody format than they are used to.
