There are plenty oficonic creatures in theFinal Fantasyfranchise, but few can strike quite as much fear into the hearts of players as the grudge-bearing Tonberry. First introduced in the series' fifth installment, Tonberries have gone on to appear in just about everyFinal Fantasygame, which is what made their initial absence fromFinal Fantasy 16so strange.

Thankfully, they return as part of the Rising Tide DLC, appearing in numerous parts of Mysidia and during the expansion’s main story. They even have their own questline, which culminates in players needing to take down the Tonberry King in the Reign of Pain side quest. Doing so will reward them with the Notched Tang crafting component, which is needed to craft some ofFinal Fantasy 16’s best equipment.

How to Start the Reign of Pain Side Quest

Reign of Pain can only be triggered onceFinal Fantasy 16players have completed the What Ails You and Uninvited Guest side quests. Assuming they’ve done so, they should head to Haven and speak with Fanet, who reveals that the only way to lift Talor’s curse is to seek out and slay the Tonberry King Notorious Mark. Before she can finish talking, though, news comes in that there’s an army of Tonberries out on The Cloak, so players will need to head through the nearby gate and defeat the group of Tonberries that are amassing there.

How to Find and Beat the Tonberry King (Notched Tang Location)

To find the Tonberry King, players will need to head to an area called The Path of Corruption, which is to the east of the Conviction map marker. They’ll pass a bunch of regular Tonberries on their way there, but if they’reriding Clive’s Chocobo Ambrosia, players can just run straight past most of them. Eventually, the path will lead them to the Tonberry King, who is an incredibly dangerous foe. However, if they use Leviathan’s Serpent’s Cry ability and keep dodging with R1, it becomes a relatively straightforward fight. They’ll just need to time their refills well and be sure not to let the smaller Tonberries distract them. As long as they’re constantly moving and save their Eikonic Abilities for when the Tonberry King is staggered, they should be able to get through this fight without too much trouble.

Reign of Pain Rewards

Upon defeating the Tonberry King, players will receive the Notched Tang item, which is needed to craft powerful end-game equipment like the Tonberry Blade. Returning to the village and turning in the quest will also reward players with some experience and a piece of Orichalcum: one of the otherrare crafting materials inFinal Fantasy 16that’s used to make some of the game’s best weapons and armor.
