Today, Square Enix has made the 2D side-scroller known asA King’s Tale– a previous exclusive to those who pre-orderedFinal Fantasy 15at GameStop – available as a free game for everyone on the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Those who are interested in picking up the old-school beat-em-up that’s set 30 years beforeFinal Fantasy 15can do so by downloading it through the Xbox Games Store or the PlayStation Store.

Much like theBrotherhoodanime series and theKingsglaiveCGI film,A King’s Taleis meant to expand uponthe existing storyinFinal Fantasy 15, with the main game focusing on King Regis – that is, father toFF 15protagonist Noctis – and his companions, Weskham, Cid, and Clarus. The group bands together in order to do battle against monsters that have begun to invade the royal capital.

Interestingly enough, the actual campaign that players undertake inA King’s Talebegins after King Regis tellshis son Noctisa fairy tale to send him swooning into dreamland. Fans will then assume the role of a young King Regis thereafter, and bear out the beats of his bedtime story with some brawler-heavy side-scrolling.

In addition to the fantastical creatures and story elements to be found withinA King’s Tale, theFinal Fantasy 15bonus game also features some wonderful-looking retro graphics, as well as a fast-paced combat system. Not to mention, it wouldn’t be aFinal Fantasyproduct without including such familiar staples as gigantic swords andeven bigger summons.

Taking all of this into consideration, it’s good to see Square Enix offer up such a solid piece of free content for allFinal Fantasy 15fans well after the game released last year. Without a doubt, it’s the developer’s way of thanking fans for purchasing so many copies ofFinal Fantasy 15andhelping it break even with development costs on launch day.

Final Fantasy 15is out now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
