Capcom’sDeep Downwas first revealed alongside the PlayStation 4 itself in early 2013, but seven years later the game still has not seen the light of day. Pitched as a free-to-play medieval fantasy game,Deep Downwas produced byStreet Fighter’s Yoshinori Ono, who is no longer employed atCapcom. There hasn’t been much in the way of new information onDeep Downin the years since its announcement, and it seems fans won’t be getting any concrete answers about it anytime soon.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently spoke withformer PlayStation boss Shawn Laydenand asked whatever happened toDeep Down. After thinking about the question for a second, Layden reportedly responded that he has “no idea” what happened with the game. It seems that anyone intrigued byDeep Down’s reveal trailer and hoping to learn more about the game will continue to be out of luck for now.

While Capcom has not issued a formal announcement aboutDeep Down’s possible cancellation, it seems highly unlikely that the game is in active development in any serious capacity. The only signs of life have beenCapcom’s frequentDeep Downtrademark renewals. And while this does suggest that Capcom plans on doingsomethingwithDeep Downat some point, fans shouldn’t hold their breath, especially with producer Yoshinori Ono no longer with Capcom.
Ono’s departure from Capcommakes it even less likely thatDeep Downwill ever see the light of day, but there is still the off chance it could happen at some point down the line. As it stands, Capcom’s plate seems to be pretty full at the moment, having just releasedResident Evil Villagenot too long ago and working on next-gen gamePragmata, which is believed to be coming at some point in 2022.
The Capcom ransomware attack has revealed some of the company’s other plans in the near future, including aResident Evil 4remake and asequel toDragon’s Dogma. There was no mention ofDeep Downin the files that were stolen from Capcom, and so if the game ever does make a comeback, fans shouldn’t expect to see it for years to come.
In the meantime,Capcom will be at Tokyo Game Show 2021, so fans of the company should learn more about its future plans at the event. No one should go into it expecting to see anything aboutDeep Down, however.
