Atsushi Yamashiro Will Be Making His Directorial Debut in Ghost in the Shell’s 2026 Reboot

During theGhost in the Shellpanel atAnime Expo 2025, the producers would address a special addition to the crew that could contribute to the anime’s success.Atsushi Yamashiro will be making his directorial debut with theGhost in the Shell’sreboot, and despite this being his first known work, his fellow coworkers spoke only praise for his vision.

While not much may be known aboutDirector Yamashiro, he joins an already incredible staff that is sure to revitalizeGhost in the Shell’sfranchise through its reboot.Having previously worked on the sleeper hit,Dandadan, Moko-chan was revealed to be one of the animators on the project, joined by a scriptwriter fromSpace Dandy, Toh EnJoe.

Not only that, butScience SARU will be responsible for the retro anime’sreturn. The studio is best known for its phenomenal work on capturing the mind-bending beauty of surrealism in previous productions likeDandadan,The Tatami Galaxy,Ping Pong the Animation, andDevilman Crybaby.

Ghost in the Shell’smanga has more of a light-hearted tone, with the main character Motoko Kusanagi portrayed as a little eccentric in contrast to her counterpart in previous versions. Much likeDandadan, Science SARU will be responsible for walking the delicate line between the cast’s goofy antics and the cautionary tale presented in Masamune’s story.
