The Legendary Monsterverse will expand again in 2027 withGodzilla X Kong: Supernova, and when it does, I need to see Godzilla do something that he hasn’t done in the franchise since his very first appearance 11 years ago. Although no story details have been released yet,fan theories about the movie’s villainand other major plot points have flown sincethe movie’s title was revealed.
One of the most popular theories is that after two Kong-centric movies,Godzilla X Kong: Supernovawill tell a truly Godzilla-focused story, perhaps mixing in a deep dive into his origin or exploring his future with the inclusion of a son. TheSupernovasubtitle seemingly teasing the inclusion ofGodzilla’s cosmic doppelganger SpaceGodzillacertainly lends credence to that theory.
No matter who the main villain winds up being, there is one very specific element of Godzilla’s extensive backlog of Toho battles that I need the movie to include. After two movies featuring Kong as the hero standing tall, the final fight ofGodzilla X Kong: Supernovaneeds to refer back to some of Godzilla’s best battles, from the Heisei and Millennium Eras in particular, for the finish.
Godzilla Hasn’t Ended A Fight With His Atomic Breath Since 2014
The Monsterverse kicked off withGodzillain 2014, reestablishing Godzilla in Hollywood with a financially successful and visually exhilarating movie that eventually launched the interconnected universe between him and Kong. In that movie, he battled the MUTOs, a male and female pair of radioactive parasites,the latter of which he killed by delivering the “kiss of death”, a blast of atomic breath down the throat.
Since that exclamation point at the end ofGodzilla,we haven’t seen Godzilla deliver a killing blow with his atomic breath. InGodzilla: King of the Monsters, he ascended to his Burning Godzilla form and killed Ghidorah with his nuclear pulse attack. While he did blast the last remaining decapitated head of Ghidorah with his atomic breath, the fight was well over at that point.
InGodzilla vs. Kong, his atomic breath at least played a role in the final victory over Mechagodzilla, but it certainly didn’t end it (Mechagodzilla even overpowered an exhausted Godzilla in an atomic breath clash). Big G used it to charge up Kong’s axe, which is how the massive ape was able to hack the robotic Titan to pieces.

InGodzilla X Kong: The New Empire,Evolved Godzilla’s pink atomic breath certainly aided in his fight with Shimo and Skar King, but the fight actually ended when a newly-freed Shimo froze Skar King and Kong smashed him to pieces.
Godzilla’s atomic breath, especially in its more powerful forms during the Heisei and Millennium Era movies,has been treated as one of the most powerful attacks on each movie’s respective planet. That’s certainly the case in the Monsterverse, as Godzilla bored a hole to the Hollow Earth only using his atomic breath.
I need Godzilla’s atomic breath to be the final word inGodzilla X Kong: Supernova. It doesn’t need to be quite as intense and silly as him blasting Keizer Ghidorah into space at the end ofGodzilla: Final Wars, but it should be presented as strong enough to completely destroy a foe, especially if it’s a straight blast and Godzilla is in a powered-up or evolved form.
