Grok has entered the chat with a new look that is sure to surprise anime fans everywhere. When X, formerly known as Twitter, stated it’d be rolling out a new update for SuperGrok users in the form of AI companionship, no one would have expected that one of them would be none other than Misa Amane fromDeath Note.
Death Noteis ananime staple of its time back in the early 2000sfor its captivating motifs on justice, who should hand out the sentence, and how power can ultimately lead to corruption. Misa Amane is the female lead in the anime, popular for her attractive appearance, gothic attire, and loyalty towards the series' main protagonist, Light Yagami.

X Users Pointed Out Ani’s Blatant Recreation of Death Note’s Female Lead
Although not entirely a miss with anime fans, Grok’s new AI Companion, known as Ani, has been accused of ripping off Misa’s appearance. From their blonde hair to the gothic attire, fans have pointed out many similarities as well as Elon Musk’s fascination with thecharacter fromDeath Noteand anime in general.
While not a faithful recreation, there is an uncanny resemblance, although that could be partially due to the AI companion itself. Many X users have even joked that Ani is meant to be “an uncopyrighted Misa” so that the social media site and Musk can avoid future legal disputes.
On the other hand, users have asked Grok themselves for the answer, and the AI assistant has subtly confirmed that Ani was meant to resemble Misa to appeal to anime fans. Ani has certainly done exactly that, as people claim she “looks a thousand times better than Misa” and has already garnered quite a bit of fanart.
Can Grok’s New Controversy Land It in a Copyright Dispute?
Chances Are Very Unlikely For Ani to See Any Real Legal Trouble
Although Ani is clearly inspired by Misa, Grok isn’t going to be receiving a notice anytime soon about altering her for future use. Her appearance is just different enough to separate her from theDeath Notefranchise, and the likeness ends at first glance. It’s generic, subtle, and serves as a nod to one of anime’s most famous goth girls.
Evidently, it won’t stop at just Ani since Chad has yet to be announced. As one of the other AI companions, Grok also plans to debut an anime male in future installments, and there’s no telling what famous anime character he’ll be said to resemble.
