HBO’sIt: Welcome to Derry’sfirst look teaser debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, offering a glimpse at its chilling tone.Welcome to Derryseason 1is among the most anticipated horror TV shows of the year, with filmmaker Andy Muschietti following up on his duology of films with an expanded TV series.

Screen Rantwas in attendance at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 when HBO revealed a private screening of itsWelcome to Derryteaser trailer. Thetrailer included several horrific action shots of Derry, surrounding a child looking to hitchhike who is welcomed into the car of a familypassing by.

Pennywise holding a balloon is in front of teenagers riding bikes and a “Welcome to Derry” sign.

The child requests that he be taken “anywhere but Derry,” and though the family is welcoming at first, they eventually turn on him. They drive back to Derry, and the boy tries to get out of the car. The pregnant mother has something moving under her skin, and the son suddenly has Pennywise-like eyes.

Theteaserconcluded with a winged, fanged creature flying into the car and attacking the boy, only to shift to a nearby winter river, where the title “It: Welcome to Derry” emerged from the water.

What It: Welcome To Derry’s Teaser Means

Welcome To Derry Will Be Chock-Full Of Horror

Part of the aforementioned sequence was shown at the start of theWelcome to Derryteaser released to the public in May (which can be seen below), with the kid entering the car. However, itappears that those at SDCC were given the entirety of this scene, including some gruesome visualsthat the previous trailer had skipped over.

It’s essential to note that, although theItmovies omit a significant portion of Stephen King’s enormous novel, the vast majority of this series will still be original material. There will be aspects that are based on ideas mentioned in the book, but much of Pennywise’s history in Derry is teased and not fully illustrated.

With that in mind, it’sstill too early to tell who these characters are or what role they play, but much of the HBO series could be spent examining various figures in Derry who’ve had the misfortune of entering Pennywise’s orbit. The critical part is that this show won’t be skimping on the horror.

HBO’s Horror Show Will Offer A More In-Depth Look At Derry Than Before

The promise of this series is not only to offer more context to Pennywise and his exploits prior to the films, but also to examine the flawed state of Derry. As is the case in other Stephen King books, likeSalem’s Lot, theItnovel is as much about its town as it is its horror elements.

So far, I love that the series is really honing in on the Derry aspect. When reading the novel, it’s evident that King really focused on the characterization of this town and its people. It: Welcome to Derryneeds to make the town itself the compelling foundation of the series, with Pennywise being the cherry on top.
