Kingpin’s MCU storyline is set to come to a head in season 2 ofDaredevil: Born Againand the fallout could be the perfect chance to bring back Luke Cage. After the success of Netflix’sDaredevil, it’s no surprise that the MCU’s take on the series would be just as well-received. Bringing back fan-favorite Matt Murdock, the MCU is slowly bringing the Defenders into the canon, especially with the announcement thatJessica Jones will return in season 2. There’s another member of the Defenders who has yet to appear, but Kingpin’s storyline could be the key to his return.

Luke Cage was the third member of theDefenders to get a solo series on Netflix. A wrongfully incarcerated man, Luke was experimented on in prison after a near-death experience. It gave him superhuman strength and seemingly unbreakable skin, and he then used his powers to become a hero for hire at the ground-level. He eventually teamed up with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist to form the Defenders. He’s currently the crime boss of Harlem, which would make it easy for Marvel to have him reunite with his fellow Defenders in New York soon.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Is Theorized To Adapt Marvel’s Devil’s Reign Storyline

The End Of Season 1 Echoes The Comic Storyline

With where the first season ofDaredevil: Born Againleft off, many fans are theorizing that season 2 will adapt the Marvel Comics’Devil’s Reignstoryline. In the 2021 arc, Wilson Fisk is elected mayor of New York City. He ran on an anti-vigilante platform and has now implemented the Safer Streets Initiative, making all vigilantism illegal and putting the city under martial law. The city’s current state is incredibly similar to whereDevil’s Reignbegins, with Fisk in charge and superpowered individuals on the outs.

Though Fisk seems to be in total control at the end of season 1,Matt is assembling a ground-level team of his own to take on the mayor. Echoing the events ofDevil’s Reign, the clash between Daredevil and Fisk inDaredevil: Born Againseason 2 is set to be one of the most important events between the long-time enemies. The original comic run was a story of fairly large proportions, and now that we know that a big name like Jessica Jones is returning, it seems all but confirmed that the MCU is setting upDevil’s Reign.

Devil’s Reign Ends With Luke Cage Becoming New York’s Next Mayor

Luke Cage Goes Against Wilson Fisk

Among the huge cast of characters inDevil’s Reign, Luke Cage played a key part in the story. After Fisk outlaws vigilantism, the Avengers decide to put up a mayoral candidate of their own. Although it wouldn’t be an easy task, they decided that Luke would be the best person for the job. When the heroes finally managed to take Fisk down,Luke was the only name on the ballot, which meant that he became mayor by default. In the aftermath ofDevil’s Reign, Luke settles into his new position and works to undo the damage that Fisk did.

If the theories are true andDaredevil: Born Againreally does adaptDevil’s Reign, it would make sense for Luke to appear at some point. Fans were wondering how the MCU would start to bring back the Defenders, and Jessica Jones’ season 2 appearance may just be the beginning. Fisk’s downfall in season 2 seems inevitable, meaning that someone would have to take over as mayor after he’s gone. Luke is already a natural part of theDevil’s Reignstory, and it would make sense for him to return in a Defenders-related project.

Bringing Luke Cage Back By Making Him Mayor Would Be A Truly Epic Return

It Would Set Him up For Further Storylines

Although the Defenders aren’t heroes who are on the same scale as the Fantastic Four or the X-Men, they have become a very beloved team by fans. Matt’s official MCU debut did the character justice, and having Jessica appear in season 2 is evidence that the studio wants to do more with the Defenders. It feels likeLuke’s MCU debut is on the horizon, and having him appear because of theDevil’s Reignstoryline would be the epic return that he deserves.

Devil’s Reignand its aftermath showed a different side of Lukestepping up to the plate. It would make sense for where he currently is in the MCU as well, as he took over as crime boss of Harlem because he wanted to protect the city. Stepping up as mayor in protest against Fisk’s control would align with his past motives, and it would set Luke up for plenty of future storylines even after season 2 ofDaredevil: Born Again.
