I’m really hoping a bigLex Luthortheory proves true for James Gunn’sSuperman. Played by Nicholas Hoult, Lex Luthor is going to be one of the predominant antagonists in the DCU’s first live-action movie. With that in mind, a new behind-the-scenes photo supports one of my biggest hopes for Lex Luthor and his rivalry with David Corenswet’s Superman.

A super-genius and powerful businessman, it’s already apparent from the trailers that Lex Luthor is harboring some great resentment and hatred for Superman. Not only has it been teased that he might launch a raid or attack onSuperman’s Fortress of Solitude, but he also has a mysterious masked bodyguard who appears to be as strong as Kal-El himself. That said, a new BTS photo released by James Gunn supports a big DCU theory that Lex Luthor may end up facing Superman more directly.

Some Of The Newest Superman Set Photos Have Raised A Major Theory About Lex Luthor’s Story In The DCU Movie

The DCU’s Luthor May Get His Classic Warsuit

While the image is seemingly innocuous on the surface,eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out what looks to be a suit of armor deep in the background of the official behind-the-scenes photo released by James Gunn celebrating Edi Gathegi’s birthday back in March. While it could just be technology utilized byMister Terrific in the upcoming DCU movie, the armor in the background notably appears to be green. For fans of the comics and/or previously releasedSupermancontent, this is a strong indicator that the armor belongs to Lex Luthor himself.

Lex Luthor usually prefers using brains over brawn in his battles with Superman. However, circumstances can arise where the DC villain is motivated to take matters into his own hands with his high-tech warsuit. Extremely durable and outfitted with the latest technology and armaments from LexCorp, Lex’s green warsuit is a staple of Luthor’s repertoire in the comics and adjacent media. That said, Lex Luthor donning his green power suit on the big screen in live-action would be an exciting DC first.

Why Lex Luthor Having A Warsuit Would Be Great For His Superman Story

Taking On The Man of Steel Directly

From the trailers alone, it seems pretty clear that Lex Luthor will be utilizing a variety of means and agents to take down Superman. A trip to the Fortress of the Solitude also seems likely, given the shots of Luthor wearing winter gear and shades in the Arctic, and Superman’s robot attendants having been attacked. Additionally, we can’t forget aboutLuthor’s mysterious superpowered bodyguard, whom many have theorized is likely an Ultraman/Bizarro hybrid character who could counter Kal-El’s abilities, causing great injury to the Man of Steel as seen in trailers' opening sequences.

Keeping all of that in mind, it’s not hard to imagineLex Luthor growing enraged by Supermanas he more than likely withstands and comes back from everything his arch-foe throws at him in the upcoming DCU movie. This could then lead to Luthor donning his classic warsuit as a last resort, taking on the Man of Steel himself. After all, the armor has often symbolized Luthor’s desperate desire to compensate for his perceived inadequacies and failings compared to the Kryptonian hero.

DC’s History With Lex Luthor’s Warsuit Bodes Well For A DCU Adaptation

It Always Fun To See Lex Get His Hands Dirty

Whether it’s in the original DC Comics,Superman & Lois,Smallville, or any of the various animated DC projects featuring Superman’s nemesis,Lex Luthor battling the Man of Steel in his green warsuit is always an entertaining ride, an epic means of pitting the classic rivals directly against each other. That said, we’ve never seen it happen on the big screen with big-budget blockbuster-level effects. With that in mind, I’m really hoping that Gunn’s recent BTS photo does indeed feature Luthor’s armor, as it would cetainly be the perfect way to set this new live-action Lex Luthor from the big-screen Luthors of the past.
