WARNING: SPOILERS ahead forIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17, episodes 1 & 2.
The second crossover episode betweenIt’s Always Sunny in PhiladelphiaandAbbott Elementaryfixed a major criticism from the first one, which was a part ofAbbott Elementary’sfourth season. It’s Always Sunnykicked off its seventeenth season by offering their perspective on the samevolunteer week shown in theAbbottepisode.

Theseason 17 premiere ofIt’s Always Sunny, appropriately titled “The Gang F***s Up Abbott Elementary,“revisits Charlie learning how to read at a kindergarten level, Dee making moves of Janine’s boyfriend, Gregory, and Mac being Ava’s personal assistant for the week as he tries to get her to sign court-ordered paperwork.
It’s Always Sunny Season 17’s Version Of Abbott Elementary’s Crossover Features Dennis Way More
Dennis Is Revealed To Be Brewing Coffee In A Science Classroom
Dennis, played by Glenn Howerton, was notably absent for the majority of the firstAbbott Elementarycrossover episode. Once Dennis and the gang learned that theAbbottcrew were followed around by a production team with cameras,Dennis was hilariously the first one who walked away and avoided the camerasfor the rest of the episode.
Although Dennis was hardly in theAbbottversion, he’s in theSunnyversion a lot. He was revealed to have been making his own brew of coffee for theAbbottteam in a science classroom in theIt’s Always Sunnyepisode. This justifies his absence from the first crossover episode, sincehe was mostly in the classroom perfecting his brew the entire time.
Why Dennis Was Really Barely In Abbott Elementary Season 4’s Crossover Episode
The real behind-the-scenes reason why Howerton’s iconic character, Dennis, wasn’t featured in the firstAbbott Elementarycrossover episode was a scheduling conflict. He had an obligation to another TV series he stars in, Netflix’sSirens, which prevented him from having a larger role in theAbbottepisode.
Abbott Elementaryexecutive producer Patrick Schumackerexplained why Howerton was notably underutilized in theAlways Sunnycrossover. “Glenn had a show that he is a series regular on called Sirens. He flew in specifically to work on this and had to fly back. We had him for half a day, so we had to build that in.”
There was initial uncertainty before production started on thefirst crossover episode about whether Howerton would be able to fully participate or not. “That was one of those ones where we didn’t know if we had him, and so, we had to stay a little bit nimble as far as breaking the story. But he’s very heavy in their episode.”
Fortunately for fans ofIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Dennis is featured much more in the second crossover episode, which got season 17 off to a great start.
