Marvel’s advanced solicitations forX-Men#16 “spoiled” the introduction of the 3K X-Men team, and indeed, the final page ofX-Men#16, which formally debuts the characters, is similar to series artist Ryan Stegman’s cover for the subsequent issue. Notably, the stand-out flourish is the way “X-Men” is rendered in the franchise’s instantly-recognizable yellow-and-blue 3D lettering when the team’s presumed leader declares “We’re the X-Men,” as if granting them a degree of legitimacy, while setting up a clash over the very identity of the team, and debatably, the franchise.

X-Men#16, Main Cover By Ryan Stegman; 3K Variant By Gerardo Sandoval

Marvel has let slip the names of two of the 3K X-Men already, courtesy ofa variant cover forX-Men#16, which identifies two of the mutants as “Constellation,” and “Juice.“Presumably, the issue, when it hits shelves, will reveal the names and powers of the full roster. The conceit of the team is that they have had their mutant genes activated as adults, unlike in traditionalX-Menlore, in which mutant abilities usually manifest in adolescence or one’s teenage years. This alone gives them a unique dynamic, which can in turn make them a novelfoil for Cyclops' X-Men.

The 3K X-Men have the potential to present a new, complex challenge for the franchise’s heroes, but Marvel’sX-Office, and the creative team behind thisX-Menrun, need to follow through on the promise of delivering somethingX-fans haven’t encountered before. The 3K X-Men could be a threatunlike any before inX-Mencanon, but that means more than just having new powers, and new designs, and calling themselves “X-Men”; to achieve their full potential, they must present a legitimate existential threat to the trueX-Menand their ideals.
