On April 25, Marvel Studios sent a letter to New York federal judge Lewis Liman asking the court to shut down Baldoni’s request for documents relating to the character, claiming they’re irrelevant to Baldoni’s claims of defamation. They also cited potential harm to Marvel if the confidential documents entered the public record.
On April 28, Baldoni, through his lawyers, responded to Marvel’s move to shut down his request by reaffirming the documents are relevant to his case and pose little harm to the studio sinceDeadpool & Wolverinehas already been released. The actor argues that proving Reynolds intentionally mocked Baldoni through the Nicepool character is important because it would establish malice for his defamation claim. Further, Baldoni’s lawyers accused Marvel of"refusing to engage"with Baldoni to resolve the dispute.

From a larger picture, this latest update about Nicepool will not necessarily be something that hurtsDeadpool & Wolverine, given that the movie has had its theatrical run and has already become available through home media. If anything,Nicepool’s legacy will now simply be awkward and bizarre, as the world collectively determines on their own whether or not this was a character created for the purpose of mocking Baldoni. There really is no way to remove Nicepool fromtheDeadpool & Wolverinestory, unless he was digitally replaced with another character who serves a similar purpose for the arc.
