Warning! This article contains SPOILERS forAvengers#750 andAvengers Forever! The demonMephistois one of the most unapologetically evil villains in the Marvel universe, and his plans are proportionately ambitious. Marvel’s Mephisto has remained a key figure in the comics since his introduction in 1968’sSilver Surfer#3, and he made his live-action movie debut in 2007’sGhost Rider, followed by 2012’sGhost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Yet, Mephisto only made his debut in 2025’sIronheart, which may catapult the villain into MCU stardom.
Commonly known as the Devil, but not related to Lucifer,Mephisto rules over what mortals call “Hell"and possesses all the powers of the traditional Satan. Mephisto has acquired the souls of countless victims, including Johnny Blaze a.k.a. Ghost Rider and Doctor Doom’s mother Cynthia von Doom.Across millennia, Mephisto has focused on tempting clueless victims, apparently with the sole goal of spreading corruption and deriving power from it. However, there’s more to Mephisto’s goals than just chaos.

Mephisto’s Goals Have Evolved Throughout The Decades
Mephisto Has Been An Agent Of Evil And Chaos Since His Inception
Mephisto’s earliest appearances portray him as a devilish manipulator who thrives on corruption and despair.Mephisto first attempts to obtain the Silver Surfer’s soul, and he soon succeeds with Doctor Doom’s mother, Cynthia von Doom. Most infamously,Mephisto strikes a soul-stealing bargain with Johnny Blaze, transforming him into Ghost Rider. These early stories portray Mephisto as an archetypal Satan figure driven by malice and the desire to damn others just for sport.
Mephisto’s goals gradually go from tormenting individuals to asserting dominance over other powerful entities

Over time, Mephisto’s motivations began to reflect more strategic power grabs. InSecret Wars II, Mephisto conspires to manipulate the omnipotent Beyonder by creating the Legion Accursed, hoping to siphon the Beyonder’s power. Later, Mephisto battles Hela for dominion over deceased souls, which draws in the Avengers and reveals Mephisto’s desperation to maintain influence in the afterlife. Mephisto’s goals gradually go from tormenting individuals to asserting dominance over other powerful entities.
Mephisto, Hela, and Death are three Marvel entities that share authority over the dead.
In more recent years, Mephisto’s schemes have expanded in scope. Mephisto has clashed with his own son, Blackheart, over control of Hell, and he seized the opportunity to invade Las Vegas to corrupt souls en masse.Mephisto’s thirst for power is reflected in his fixation on Spider-Man, which grows after the infamousOne More Daystoryline, when he erases Peter and Mary Jane’s marriage out of fear that their daughter, Mayday Parker, could someday destroy him.
Mephisto’s Ultimate Plan Is To Reach The Heart Of The Marvel Multiverse
Mephisto Set His Sights On The Forbidden God Quarry
Mephisto’s ultimate ambition crystallizes in Jason Aaron’sAvengersrun, where the demon fully showcases his evolution from a sadistic tempter to a full-fledged multiversal supervillain.Mephisto forms his multiversal Council of Redto seize control of the First Firmament inside the Quarry of Creation, which could serve as a reality-defining power source for the villain.Mephisto takes a break from toying with individual Marvel characters and stealing their souls to rewrite the rules of creation itself.
No longer content with Hell and Earth, Mephisto sets his eyes on various sets of multiverses
Whereas the Council of Reeds assembled to protect reality, Mephisto’s Council of Red is clear proof of Mephisto’s vanity, as he believes that only his vision deserves to shape existence. By targeting the God Quarry, Mephisto tries to usurp reality’s authorship and seeks to impose his hellish vision across all universes. No longer content with Hell and Earth, Mephisto sets his eyes on various sets of multiverses.
To achieve it, Mephisto sabotages the multiverse’s greatest defenders. He destroys other universes, changes the course of various events in different parts of the timeline, and attempts to engineer a reality where the Avengers never existed. The demon also replaces the Avengers with the Squadron Supreme and brutalizes a version of the prehistoric Avengers. Mephisto personally orchestrates tragedies across multiple Earths and eras to demoralize the heroes who might oppose him and render them too fractured to stop him.
Mephisto Assembles Two Powerful Supervillain Teams To Access The God Quarry
Mephisto Leads The Multiversal Masters Of Evil And The Council Of Red
Each Mephisto in the Council of Red comes from a reality where he achieved dominion, and Prime Mephisto chose them to coordinate a unified campaign against the multiverse’s core structures. The existence of the Council of Red has terrifying implications beyond their mere power.Mephisto is suddenly a multiversal villain, and he can also organize versions of the most selfish and treacherous villains into a collective force.
To attack specific timelines, Mephisto also joins forces with Doom Supreme, who describes himself as the most powerful version of Doctor Doom. Together, Mephisto and Doom Supreme assemble the Multiversal Masters of Evil, composed of twisted versions of iconic villains such as the evil Wolverine variant Berserker, the Destroyer-armored King Killmonger, and the symbiote-wearing Black Skull. It’s strongly implied that Mephisto viewed Doom as a disposable tool, while Doom only wants the power for himself.
Despite their strong alliance, Mephisto and Doom Supreme are ultimately defeated through the combined efforts the mainline Earth-616 Avengers and several other heroes likethe All-Rider Ghost Rider. Doom Supreme, while leading an army of Dooms, is outsmarted by none other than Ant-Man, while Mephisto’s plan collapses when the heroes breach the God Quarry. Despite his surprisingly effective plans, Mephisto isn’t more successful thanSecret Wars' God Emperor Doom at rewriting reality, but he comes quite close.
Mephisto’s Ultimate Plan Makes Him One Of The Avengers' Most Dangerous Villains
It Took Multiple Teams Of Avengers To Defeat Mephisto
Mephisto may not enjoy the same level of visibility as Thanos, Doctor Doom, or Kang the Conqueror, but Jason Aaron’s Mephisto-centeredAvengersarc proves that’s by choice, not by lack of power.Mephisto rarely operates on a cosmic scale, seemingly because he usually isn’t interested. When he does act, Mephisto comes alarmingly close to succeeding. Mephisto is every bit as dangerous as Marvel’s most notorious threats, just quieter and more patient.
Mephisto’s failed attempt to reach the God Quarry repositions the demon as a cosmic strategist with ambitions rivaling Doctor Doom’s.Marvel’s Devil has spent centuries as the king of Hell playing long games to corrupt souls, but he can easily pivot to multiversal threat under the right conditions. Mephisto’s quick coordination of the Council of Red and the multiversal Masters of Evil is a feat that few Marvel supervillains can match.
Should another similar opportunity arise, Mephisto will certainly act again. If cornered, Mephisto has the power and sheer malevolence to rival Marvel’s most powerful villains. The fact that he usually doesn’t makes him a less predictable threat. Unlike Doctor Doom or Kang,Mephistocould decide to set his sights on the multiverse again without notice.
