Hope forMindhunterseason 3 is reignited after six years, with one of the show’s leads revealing an inside scoop on a potential return. The Netflix thriller series is produced and directed by legendary filmmaker David Fincher, and the prospect of aMindhunterseason 3has been up in the air since 2019. Fincher has moved on to other projects, with two feature films released on Netflix in the meantime. He’s also currently working on a follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’sOnce Upon a Time in Hollywoodwith Brad Pitt.

Holt McCallany, who plays Bill Tench inMindhunter, recently revealed toCBRthat he’s met with David Fincher aboutapotential return in the form of three two-hour movies. He explains that, while David Fincher is meticulous and would need to be satisfied with the scripts, there are people working on writing. McCallany reveals that it’s mostly about David Fincher having the time and dedication for the project, and that they “gotta wait for the best actor on Broadway,” referring toMindhunterco-star Jonathan Groff, who won a Tony Award in 2024. “So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it’s just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

“And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align. The good news is that we’re at Netflix withThe Waterfront, and those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that’s a big question mark.”

What Holt McCallany’s Mindhunter Season 3 Update Means

Mindhunter Season 3 Is Hopeful But Still Far From Guaranteed

While Holt McCallany’sMindhunterupdate is certainly hopeful for those who want more, it’s worth mentioning that it’s not the first time he’s offered his regrets about the show ending early. As he mentions,it’s still going to require the stars to align, primarily for David Fincher to find the time, but also for the lead actors' schedules to align with the director’s. With six years of waiting and uncertainty, it can be challenging to get the band back together in a way that everyone is on board with.

David Fincher only has one directorial project in the works right now, which isThe Adventures of Cliff Booth. That film is in pre-production, but with actors like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Elizabeth Debicki signing on for the cast recently, it seems like it could begin filming sooner rather than later. Still, thatwould likely mean waiting a while longer before Fincher could even dedicate the time to get aMindhuntersequel movieoff the ground. This hypothetical project is still years away, if it ever comes to be.

Our Take On Holt McCallany’s Mindhunter Update

It’s Too Early To Get Our Hopes Up

I’d love to see moreMindhunteras much as anyone, but I don’t think this quote is anything to get excited about just yet. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but this is still just speculation. It’s good to know David Fincher is thinking about the projectand looking into narrative options, but I’m sure a filmmaker of his prestige looks through numerous scripts each year. Until there’s something concrete, I’m perfectly willing to accept what we already have asMindhunter’scomplete story.
