Now that he is finally making his debut inMortal Kombat 2, Johnny Cage can fight a character who will return from the dead in the sequel. In theupcomingMortal Kombat 2, Johnny Cage will be portrayed by the extremely charismatic Karl Urban. However, in addition to him, there will also be several othernew characters inMortal Kombat 2.

The highly anticipated sequel will introduce characters like Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, and Baraka. These characters will all fight for Outworld in theMortal Kombat tournament. Quan Chi, in particular, will likely be a very important character in the sequel since he will be responsible for bringing fighters back from the dead.

Because of Quan Chi’s inclusion, major characters who died in the first movie will return. Bi-Han, Mileena, and Goro may all fight for Outworld once again in the sequel, but Kano’s return might be the most exciting. Since he will be revived,Kano and Johnny Cage will be able to fight against each other inMortal Kombat 2, which could be one of the best showdowns in the film.

Mortal Kombat Changed Kano - And Made Him More Like Johnny Cage

Kano Got A Lot Of Screen Time In The First Movie

Without a doubt, Kano was the most entertaining character in the firstMortal Kombatmovie. While he is usually portrayed as a villain in the games,Kano actually sided with Earthrealm’s other fighters, such as Cole Young and Sonya Blade, in the first half of the movie. Since he was temporarily aligned with Earthrealm’s warriors, Kano assumed Johnny Cage’s usual role.

In this group,Kano was the one who cracked a lot of jokes and tested the patience of the other Earthrealm fighters. In theMortal Kombatvideo games, this is usually Johnny Cage’s role. Therefore, it makes sense thatJohnny Cage wasn’t in the firstMortal Kombatmovie because of Kano. In a 2021 interview, screenwriter Greg Russo said:

Mortal Kombat II - Poster

We know who the classics are. We know who’s in there. And it was about trying to fit them all in. Johnny Cage is a character that we wanted to put in there. Ultimately the reason he’s not in there is because of Kano, and we ended up loving Kano [Josh Lawson] in that role more.

I’d rather save them and do them right. Introduce them correctly later than try to jam them into a role where it doesn’t feel natural.

Since the writers enjoyed writing for Kano and loved Josh Lawson in the role, there was no room for Johnny Cage in the first film.If he had been included in the movie, Johnny Cage would’ve taken a significant amount of screen time away from Kano, and vice versa. However, thankfully, we will finally see them share the screen inMortal Kombat 2.

Johnny Cage Vs. Kano Would Be An Amazing Fight For Mortal Kombat 2

Johnny Cage & Kano Are Somewhat Similar Characters

While Kano was a standout character in the first film,Johnny Cage will probably get a lot more attention in the upcoming sequel. After all, since his debut is so highly anticipated, it has been suggested thatJohnny Cage might beMortal Kombat 2’smain character.

Even though Johnny Cage will probably get way more screen time in the sequel, that doesn’t mean Kano can’t also get some standout scenes. Specifically,a fight between Johnny Cage and Kanoshould definitely happen since the latter betrayed Earthrealm in the first movie. If this does happen, this could very likely be one of the best fights inMortal Kombat 2.

Sincethey are both overly confident, oftentimes quite arrogant characters who like to crack jokes and get on people’s nerves, this fight would be so entertaining to watch in the sequel. I can only imagine what these characters will say to each other while fighting for their opposing realms. Therefore, it would be a major missed opportunity if a fight between Johnny Cage and Kano wasn’t included inMortal Kombat 2.
