Just asMr. & Mrs. Smithseason 2 will have new lead actors, it will also relocate to a completely different setting. The first season released in February 2024 to critical acclaim, particularly forMr. & Mrs. Smith’s main cast, headed up by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, who were both nominated for Emmys for their performances.
Though theending ofMr. & Mrs. Smithseason 1 left the door open for Glover and Erskine to potentially return, they are so far not expected to reprise their roles, though Glover will remain on as showrunner and executive producer. Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher will reportedly lead season 2.

Deadlinealso recently reported that, unlikeMr. & Mrs. Smithseason 1, which was set and primarily filmed in New York, the second installment has a brand new setting. While specific production details are still under wraps,Mr. & Mrs. Smithseason 2 will be filmed in Los Angeles, California.
This relocationcomes on the heels of California Governor Gavin Newsom announcing that the state has recently been approved for funding of $750 million for its Film & TV Tax Credit Program. Other upcoming TV productions set for filming in California includeThe Pitt,Paradise, andNCIS: Origins.
What Mr. & Mrs Smith’s Filming Relocation Means For Season 2
A Show About Spies Can Be Set Anywhere, And California Makes Sense
For many TV series, the setting is so important that it feels like it’s part of the main cast. However, by their very nature, movies andTV shows about spies see their protagonists travel all over the world, so movingMr. & Mrs. Smithseason 2 to California shouldn’t feel too jarring.
It’s becoming rarer and rarer for Hollywood productions to actually be filmed in California, as other locations, including season 1’s New York, offer bigger tax breaks and incentives.
The 2020s in particular have not been kind to film and TV productions in California, asthe state has faced the COVID-19 pandemic, the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, and most recently, the early 2025 wildfires. Popularshows likeMr. & Mrs. Smith,The Pitt, and others filming there is definitely a step in the right direction.
Our Take On Mr. & Mrs. Smith Being Set In California
It Will Help Establish The New Cast
Mark Eydelshteyn and Sophie Thatcher have a tough act to follow, stepping into Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s shoes, and the new location could work in their favor. IfMr. & Mrs. Smithwere to remain in season 1, and even use some of the show’s pre-established settings, it would just remind us that the beloved season 1 cast is gone.
But by moving the action to California, the new actors have the chance to make the season entirely their own while still adhering to the sexy spy premisewe all know and love. After all, Glover and Erskine’s iterations of theirMr. & Mrs. Smithcharacters couldn’t be more different from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s in the original 2005 movie, so Eydelshteyn and Thatcher deserve that same opportunity.
