Netflix may have finally found its perfectYellowstonereplacement after testing multiple Western series over the last few years. Since Taylor Sheridan, the creator ofYellowstoneand other great shows such asLandmanand1923, has an exclusive deal with Paramount, Netflix has been trying to capitalize onYellowstone’spopularityon its own platform.
Netflix has found some success with its original Western shows in the past, most notably its standout 2017 seriesGodless, which won three Emmys, including Outstanding Supporting Actor for Jeff Daniels. Lately, however,Netflix has been upping its slate of Western-themed content in 2025, starting withAmerican Primevalin January and continuing withRansom Canyonin April, as well as the recently releasedUntamed.
Ransom Canyon Can Be Netflix’s Long-Term Version Of Yellowstone
It’s Based On A Popular Book Series & Was A Streaming Hit For Netflix
Ransom Canyonseason 1 was a big hit for Netflix in the first half of 2025. Not only did itrank in the top 40 for total TV viewership from January to June 2025with 29 million views, but if you go by hours viewed, it’s in the top 20 of global TV shows on the streaming platform (228.9 million).
Even thoughRansom Canyonhas already been renewed for season 2, that level of popularity bodes well for it to have a much longer-term future, which is what it’d need to truly be Netflix’s version ofYellowstone.The series is also based on a successful book series by Jodi Thomas, setting it up nicely for a long tenure.
While there’s no true replacement forYellowstone,Ransom Canyonoffers many similar elements, even though it is ultimately more of a romantically driven story thanYellowstoneever was. That said, theRansom Canyonbook series is more of an anthology than a set of sequels, suggesting that Netflix could make key changes to emulate some ofYellowstone’smore gritty and action-oriented moments.

American Primeval Earned 47 Million Views Earlier This Year
Netflix is also still riding on the popularity ofAmerican Primeval, which was a very big January 2025 release that earned 47 million views. Although it’s not really similar toYellowstone, it’s most similar to1883out of all Sheridan’s shows. Regardless,American Primevalhas the potential for further expansion, either with a season 2 or a spinoff/prequel series.
Untamedis yet another Western-themed Netflix series, which centers on a murder mystery set in Yosemite National Park, and is currently topping Netflix’s global streaming charts. Out of all these series,Ransom Canyonstill looks to be the best Netflix currently offers in terms of aYellowstonereplacement show.
