Production onMarvelStudios’The Falcon and the Winter Soldierhas resumed following a months-long shutdown prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. Now, stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan have taken to their respective social media accounts to share new behind-the-scenes photos of their antics on the set of the Disney+ series.
Marvel Studios’Avengers: Endgameconcluded with Steve Rogers traveling back in time to return the Infinity Stones the team had taken to reverse Thanos' decimation. Unbeknownst to most the team, Rogers also decided to remain in the past and live out the remainder of his life with Peggy Carter, the Strategic Scientific Reserve officer he fell in love with before crash landing Red Skull’s aircraft in the Arctic and waking up several decades later. However, Rogers was sure to return the present as an older man to pass on the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, the former pararescueman whom he befriended just as Hydra was emerging from the shadows to take over S.H.I.E.L.D.

Marvel Studios’The Falcon and the Winter Soldierwill follow both Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as they attempt to move forward without their longtime friend. With production on the seriesnow back on track in Atlanta, Georgia, Mackie offered fans a new glimpse at his updated Falcon costume for the show on his official Twitter account while also noting that he is following social distancing guidelines. The photograph of Mackie appears to have been taken by Stan, who shared an image of himself taking the shot of his co-star on his own Instagram account.
Directed by Kari Skogland from scripts penned under the leadership of head writer Malcolm Spellman,The Falcon and the Winter Soldierwill also see the return of Daniel Brühl as Baron Helmut Zemo and Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter.Overlordstar Wyatt Russell joins the cast as John Walker, an antagonistic character from the comics best known as U.S. Agent, a government-appointed successor to Captain America. The series was originally scheduled to launch Marvel Studios' line-up of Disney+ shows in August 2020, though a recent promo for the streaming service indicatesWandaVisionwill now be the firstof these projects to premiere.
The Marvel Studios shows for Disney+ mark a new venture for the company as they look to expand the MCU beyond features. While the Marvel Television division has delivered acclaimed shows such as Netflix’sDaredevilandJessica Jones, Mackie has stated thatThe Falcon and the Winter Soldieris aiming to havethe scope and feel of a big-budget Hollywood featureas opposed to a standard TV series.
Of course, when fans will finally get to seeThe Falcon and the Winter Soldiermay depend on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic. While production is currently underway, the possibility of the second wave in the coming months or weeks means further shutdowns are not outside the realm of possibility.
