The addition of the universal NACS port, formerly Tesla’s charging port, on most EVs starting next year is great, but it creates another problem—you can’t just swap out the charging port on your old car. The solution to this? Hyundai, at least, will give you an adapter free of charge.
Hyundai has announced it will be distributing free North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters beginning in the first quarter of 2025. The adapters will enable Hyundai EV owners to tap into Tesla’sextensive Supercharger network, since NACS was Tesla’s proprietary port before Tesla made it an open standard for everyone to use. With NACS entering widespread adoption, it will also certainly be supported by other charging networks. ChargePoint isadding a lot of new EV charging stationsin collaboration with General Motors, many of which support ChargePoint’s own Omni Port system, which supports NACS.
The free adapter offer applies to a wide range of Hyundai EV models, including the popular Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, as well as the Kona Electric and earlier Ioniq hatchback. Owners who purchased or leased their Hyundai EVs on or before July 10, 2025, are eligible for the complimentary adapter, a move the company says will substantially improve the charging experience. A detailed list of eligible models, including 2025 models and vehicles from Hyundai’s luxury brand, Genesis, will be released next year.
Customers can request their free NACS adapter through the MyHyundai owner portal. This initiative follows a similar announcement from Hyundai’s sister brand, Kia, which also plans to provide free adapters to certain owners in early 2025.
It should be noted that Hyundai’s upcoming EVs starting next year will support NACS natively—the 2025 Ioniq 5, which is starting to ship to buyers, features a NACS charging port and is already cleared for access to Tesla’s Superchargers. This is just so older EVs from Hyundai also enjoy the benefits of this switch. It’s not known if other companies will also be doing this, but we certainly hope they will.
