ABC just announced Mel Owens will star inThe Golden Bachelorseason 2, but I don’t think he’s going to find love. The first season didn’t exactly result in a happily ever-after ending. Though 72-year-old Gerry Turner found love with 70-year-old Theresa Nist, their rushed marriage ended in divorce after only three months. With 66-year-old Mel chosen as Gerry’s replacement, I’m convinced that season two isn’t going to have a much happier ending. I’m not even sure if Mel will meet any women he likes on the show.

Though many fans, myself included,expected them to cast a contestant fromThe Golden Bacheloretteseason 1, the show’s producers decided to go a different way by casting a newcomer toBachelorNation. Mel Owens has never appeared on aBachelorfranchise show, and I’m glad they didn’t choose one of Joan Vassos' cast-offs.
In March, I wrote that I believed the nextGolden Bachelorwouldn’t come from Joan’s season, and I was right. Many ofthe front-runners were no longer eligible. My personal favorite, Mark Anderson, made his television premiere alongside his daughter, Kelsey Anderson, onThe Bachelor28 and was then cast inThe Golden Bacheloretteseason 1. After Joan eliminated Mark, he started dating Barbara Alyn Woods, an actress best known for her work onOne Tree Hill. Joan’s runner-up, Guy Gansert, was also a great option as the lead, but he also confirmed he was in a relationship.

The couple married when Mel was 41, and his ex-wife, Fabiana Pimentel, was only 21 years old. To me,this means Mel prefers much younger women. I don’t see him deciding to marry a woman anywhere near his age, but I’d love to be proven wrong. Unless ABC casts much younger women, my money’s on Mel walking away empty-handed.
