One Piece, unfortunately, only saw slight improvement with episode #1139, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t leave anything to get excited about for episode #1140 and beyond. It looks like it will take a while for the current phase of the Egghead arc to find its groove, but hopefully, it will still be fun to watch, more often than not.
Vegapunk’s requests for St. Saturn to call off the Buster Call fell on deaf ears, and it wasn’t long before the Marines started destroying everything he had devoted his life to building. It wasn’t long before everyone else got caught up in the destruction, and it all served as a prelude to the arc’s darkest hour, yet.

One Piece Episode 1138 Review: One Piece’s Weakest Episode In Weeks
One Piece Episode 1138 In Review
One Pieceepisode #1138 wasn’t as big an episode as previous ones, but that doesn’t mean it was bad. Not only is the writing as strong as ever, but the animation, while largely serviceable, still had plenty of great shots, with the scene of Saturn emerging from the rubble especially standing out.
The biggest problem with episode #1138, though, was its pacing. WhileOne Pieceepisode #1137adapted more than one chapter, the series is back to its usual pacing, and to make sure things didn’t go too far, episode #1138 was padded out with a multitude of flashbacks to Kuma’s backstory, even though they had just gotten done with it.

All of that is very typical ofOne Piece, but it’s disappointing to see it so soon after months of some of the anime’s best storytelling and direction. Overall,One Pieceepisode #1138’s poor direction makes it the weakest episode in weeks, but fortunately,One Pieceepisode #1139 was much better.
What Happened In One Piece Episode 1139?
Produced By Toei Animation; Directed By Yusuke Suzuki
One Pieceepisode #1139, “Destroy Egghead - The Buster Call Is Invoked”, picked up with St. Saturn declaring a Buster Call to destroy Egghead. Vegapunk begged him not to destroy Egghead and all the advancements he had made, but Saturn refused to listen, and to make matters worse, Saturn revealed that he destroyed the ship Vegapunk’s scientists tried to escape on.
While that was happening, Franky, Atlas, Bonney, and Kuma boarded the vacuum rocket to the Labophase while Sanji went back to help Vegapunk. As he did, Nami called him to ask what was going on down below, and Sanji told her group everything that was going on up to the Buster Call.

Soon enough, the Buster Call began in full force, and all Vegapunk could do was watch as his life’s work slowly crumbled before his eyes at the hands of the World Government. It was then that Saturn ordered Kizaru to kill Vegapunk, and despite his visible reluctance, Kizaru was ready to do just that.
Before Kizaru could kill Vegapunk, he saw everyone trying to escape in the vacuum rocket and shifted his focus there. The vacuum rocket was destroyed and everyone was sent falling through the air, and Saturn, with a sadistic glee, ordered the Pacifistas to kill Bonney and Kuma, much to Vegapunk’s horror.
As all of that was happening, somewhere away from Egghead, a destroyed battleship tried and failed to get in touch with the fleet at Egghead; that ship was the one Saturn sent to kill Vegapunk’s scientists, and whoever or whatever destroyed the ship was evidently on their way to Egghead.
Why One Piece Episode 1139 Didn’t Work
While episode #1139 was far better than episode #1138, it still wasn’t that great an episode to speak of. The pacing was far better, at least by comparison, but it mostly existed to set up the stakes for the climax, and because of that,One Pieceepisode #1139 ultimately had little to no meaningful substance to it.
One Piece episode #1139 ultimately had little to no meaningful substance to it.
That being said, the episode still worked because of how dramatic the points it was setting up were, especially whenever the focus was on Vegapunk. Everything is in place for a truly dramatic climax, and judging by the phenomenal new opening by Ellegarden, it’s sure to be great to watch when it finally plays out in full.
Following the conclusion ofKuma’s flashback arc,One Pieceis in an awkward place where it needs to head into Egghead’s finale, but it lacks the means to do so completely smoothly with everything that’s still going on.One Pieceepisode #1139 was a prime example of how that can be a problem, but hopefully, episode #1140 will be better.
Be sure to watchOne Pieceepisode #1140 when it releases on Sunday, August 17.
