From the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over 12 years ago to the conclusion of 2019’sEndgame,fans across the world remember Robert Downey Jr’s role as the superhero Iron Man. However, it wasn’t just his performance that brought the character of Tony Stark to life, but also the suit of armor drawing from decades of comic book stories. While Stark wore multiple Iron Man suits during his MCU appearances, there were many more iterations built and skipped over.
Yet inIron Man 3, many of those designs played a role towards the end of the film as Stark’s first Iron Legion. The final battle gave some suits an opportunity to showcase their unique look in different fights while Iron Man faced down the main villain Aldrich Killian. But recently, Andy Park, who works as a Visual Development artist atMarvel, revealed one suit had a much different look at first.

On Instagram, Park reveals that the Mark 16 worn in the battle against Killian initially had a jet-black appearance. Considering this specific suit was made for stealth missions, the dark-color scheme would perfectly match its intended role. Nevertheless, during its film spotlight versus Killian, the colors were changed to gold and red like the more well-known suit variants worn by Stark.
Although it may have been exciting for moviegoers to see another version of Iron Man reminiscent of War Machine, the background and night setting surely would clash against a darker color palette, making it harder to see details in the final fight. But after many years, fans will appreciate seeing what could have been, especially since Park went on to design other costumes such asBlack Panther’s suit.
