Warning: Spoilers ahead forResident Alienseason 4, episode 4, “Truth Hurts.“Resident Alienseason 4, episode 4, “Truth Hurts,” just confirmed something I already suspected aboutAlan Tudyk’s Harry Vanderspeigleand how the show’s current run of episodes has changed him. After being imprisoned by the Greys at theend ofResident Alienseason 3,Harry returned to Earth in the season 4 premiere to try and reclaim his lifefrom the Mantid. His failure came with the revelation that he was stuck in human form, although it later turned out that Harry is actually human now, rather than his transformation being merely inhibited.
Harry’s human storyline has allowed the show to explore new facets of Tudyk’s character, including what his life could look like if he can’t find a way to restore the DNA that was taken from him byResident Alien’s Grey Aliens. The process he’s been forced to endure has made him physically weaker, which has resulted in his becoming a more fearful individual.Harry’s newfound lactose intoleranceis perhaps a less expected symptom of his human biology, but there’s a far more worrying change that has taken place.

“Truth Hurts” Reveals Harry’s Human Brain Is Far Less Brilliant Than His Alien One
Although the physical advantages that Harry’s alien body afforded him were a major part of his character, it was his mental superiority that also set him apart. While he often struggled with the nuances of human interaction,Harry has always been an incredibly intelligent character. The biggest piece of evidence to support this is the fact that he was able to step into the role of Patience’s town doctor, despite not coming from a medical background or having any previous knowledge of human anatomy.
No matter how simple or complex the medical procedure that was required of him, Harry was shown to be capable of reading how to do it online and carrying it out flawlessly.

No matter how simple or complex the medical procedure that was required of him, Harry was shown to be capable of reading how to do it online and carrying it out flawlessly. In “Truth Hurts,” Harry confirms this is no longer within his skill set. Instead,he has been referring pretty much all of his patients to the nearby town of Braddock, “treating” only those he has booked in for therapy sessions and guessing his way through the process.
How Harry’s Human Brain Changes Resident Alien Season 4
Earth just lost a powerful tool in its battle against the Greys
Harry’s brain becoming human has largely been played for laughs so far, but it could have serious ramifications asResident Alienseason 4 progresses.Harry’s intellect has been vital throughout the story, especially in Earth’s battle against the Greys. While he appears to have generally retained most of the knowledge he acquired as an alien, it could be his understanding of that information has been dulled by his recent transformation. Even if this isn’t the case, learning complex new techniques of keeping the Greys at bay seems to be beyond Harry’s capabilities now.
HARRY: “I’m human now with a stupid human brain just like yours. I cannot learn how to operate on a diseased gall bladder in five seconds. My patients should be grateful I am hiding from them.”
- Harry to Asta inResident Alienseason 4, episode 4, “Truth Hurts.”
Furthermore,Harry’s secret identity as a being from outer space is already hanging on by a thread. Most of the show’s main characters are now aware of alien life being real, and more are slowly discovering that Harry is/was an alien. While his ability to pick up the skills needed to be a doctor so quickly helped him maintain his disguise as the original Dr. Vanderspeigle, no longer being able to do so if sure to raise some red flags. If so, everyone may learn his secret and think he’s an enemy.
That said, Harry’s new fully-human body works in his favor in that respect. While he could be outed as having extraterrestrial origins, his biggest weakness would turn into his biggest strength. It wouldn’t take too long for Harry to undergo the tests required to prove his current humanity, so I’m unsure at this point exactly where Harry’s human twist could be headed inResident Alienseason 4, but I love the unpredictability.
