WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Resurrection episode 3.
Dexter’s new sequel series,Dexter: Resurrection, is wrong about Dexter’s history of personal attachments, dating back to the very first season of the OG series. Debra Morgan, who is notably notfeatured inDexter: Resurrection, was, in fact, the first person Dexter could relate to and confide in.
Dexter: Resurrectionhas enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive responsefrom critics and viewers over the course of its first handful of episodes. The series premiered on June 26, 2025, andearned a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%, instantly making it one of theall-time best seasons ofDexterever made.

Dexter Is Wrong - He Did Have A Major Personal Attachment Before Harrison
His Sister Deb Was His Best Friend In The Original Series
When Dexter looks at the Dark Passenger’s apartment inResurrectionepisode 3, he says something along the lines of “I used to live like this, sparse with no attachments.” Harry then reminds him that he has a son, Harrison, now that he must be responsible for. However,Dexter was never truly without any attachments– before Harrison was born, his biggest personal attachment was always his sister, Deb.
Fans of the OG Dexter series are well aware ofhow deep Dexter’s relationship runs with Deb throughout the series– perhaps a bit too deep in the season 6 finale. Dexter also cared about Rita during the first four seasons of the series and surprised himself by forming a near-parental role with her kids, Astor and Cody.

If Dexter didn’t care about Rita or Deb, then their deaths wouldn’t have come back to haunt him.
While the point that Dexter was trying to make in theResurrectionepisode was that he always lived alone in an apartment where he kept his secrets securely hidden, his words overwrote some of the obvious attachmentsthat he had over the years. If he didn’t care about Rita or Deb, then their deaths wouldn’t have come back to haunt him.
Dexter Wasn’t Even Truly Alone Before New Blood After Losing Deb & Harrison
Dexter was dating Angela Bishop inNew Blood, so he still had a big personal attachment in the 2021 sequel series. While it was not anywhere near as strong as when he was in Miami with Deb and Harrison, there was really never a time before or after Harrison was born that he was completely without any attachments, even during that time he was living as a lumberjack after the season 8 finale.
Dexter forms these close attachments with Debra, Harrison, and Angela for the sake of the TV show. If he were truly by himself throughout the series, the show likely wouldn’t be as compelling. That said, Dexter has always felt existentially alone, especially becauseonly a few people have ever known him for who he truly is, and even fewer have accepted him for it. This could change after he joins the serial killer society inDexter: Resurrection.
