Taking inspiration from classic sci-fi horror like John Carpenter’sThe Thing, the reverse-horror gameCarrionlets players take on the role of a disgusting, bulbous monster that wreaks havoc on a secret research facility. And as it turns out,Carrion’s unique premise has helped it become a sales hit for publisher Devolver Digital.
Devolver Digital has confirmed thatCarrionhas nearly passed 200,000 units sold. Combined with those who are playingCarrionon Xbox Game Pass, the reverse-horror game likely has over half a million players so far. Needless to say, this is quite the success story for a relatively niche game, especially since it had to compete with much bigger titles that have released recently, like the PS4 exclusiveGhost of Tsushimaand the Nintendo Switch’sPaper Mario: The Origami King.

Carrionreviewshave been largely positive so far, and one has to imagine the positive word of mouth has convinced more people to check it out than would have otherwise. Most reviews seem to be in agreement thatCarriondelivers a quality Metroidvania experience and that playing as the horrific monster is a fun change of pace from most games, though others have been quick to criticize things like its relatively short length.
Carrionhas been one of the most-anticipated horror gamesfor years now, so it’s good to see that it has seemingly lived up to the hype. Perhaps if the sales are strong enough, the developers may release some DLC to expand on the experience a bit, or maybe a full-fledged sequel will be commissioned instead.
