Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Rick & Morty season 8, episode 4, “The Last Temptation of Jerry”.
Rick and Mortyseason 8, episode 4, carried on the show’s post-credits scene tradition by pulling off a seemingly playful gag, but it subsequently gave one great new addition a tragic ending.“The Last Temptation of Jerry” is by far season 8’s most bizarre episode so far, as the plot centered around the protagonists trying to find a solution to Jerry’s transition into a sex-crazed Easter Bunny. The action was just as crazy as it sounds, continuingRick and Morty’s new direction following Justin Roiland’s exit, which has been full of mixed results over the last two seasons.

While season 7 proved to be divisive,Rick and Mortyseason 8 has received good reviewsthanks to its loyalty to long-term fans alongside its decision to try fresh concepts. “The Last Temptation of Jerry” may not be the series' best showing, but it did at least bring in a memorable new character - General Reinhard Kincaid. He was one of the various Christian troopers introduced in season 8’s fourth episode, and having played a major role in the episode’s conclusion, it seemed like he’d be treated to a happy ending. However, the post-credits scene confirmed this wasn’t the case.
General Reinhard Kincaid’s Wife Rejected Him After A 20-Year Mission
His Wife Wanted Nothing To Do With Him After He Finally Returned Home
After finally returning home having successfully completed his mission, General Reinhard Kincaid knocked on his wife’s door as a changed man, only to be rejected. Alongside his fellow Christian troopers,Reinhard was part of a mission to destroy the Easter Bunny as the rabbit’s spirit forced people to have sex. While Rick and Morty’s main reason for trying to stop the bunny was because it was essentially controlling Jerry, the Christ troopers simply found sex gross, hence their commitment to stopping the powerful spirit.
The bunny was able to kill most of the troopers and dismembered the bottom half of Kincaid’s body, yet he still managed to survive and take down the rabbit during the episode’s conclusion. Afterward, he returned to his home where he confronted his wife, claiming he wanted to make love to her as he no longer found sex gross. Unfortunately, Reinhard was completely rejected, with his wife upset at the fact he was gone for two decades. She also called out the fact he was missing half his body, making this intimate form of affection impossible.

Considering Reinhard was an interesting new addition and arguably the MVP of the episode, it was genuinely sad to see his story end this way after everything he’d been through.
His wife ended the conversation by telling Reinhard, “Drag yourself somewhere else” before slamming the door shut, leaving him all alone. Although the sequence was played off as a gag, it was a far more tragic conclusion compared toRick and Mortyseason 8, episode 3’s post-credits scene, which was much more light-hearted. Considering Reinhard was an interesting new addition and arguably the MVP of the episode, it was genuinely sad to see his story end this way after everything he’d been through.

Reinhard Deserved A Better Ending After Saving The Day In “The Last Temptation Of Jerry”
Reinhard’s Heroics Make His Somber Ending All The More Tragic
Had it not been for Reinhard showing up and capturing the spirit of the bunny, “The Last Temptation of Jerry” could have ended very differently, suggesting he deserved a much better ending. While he never looked in much physical pain, the fact that Reinhard managed to travel toRick and Morty’s central dimension with half a body is extremely impressive. His ability to then stop the bunny, make it back to his own home, and survive the entire ordeal only further emphasizes that he’s quietly one of the show’s most badass characters.
He also has morally good intentions and spared the protagonists when he could have easily killed them, a luxury Rick and Morty probably wouldn’t have afforded him. In addition, Reinhard’s selfless nature and determination undoubtedly make him one of the best additions toRick and Mortyseason 8’s cast, proving he deserved better. Settling down with his wife and finding peace would have been a much more wholesome ending, and even if it strayed away from the usual comedic nature of the show’s post-credits scenes, this climax would have been well-earned.

Instead, he was left to suffer in isolation despite sacrificing so much, cementing a heartbreaking end to his journey. While I’d be shocked to see Reinhard show up again inRick and Mortyseason 8, it would be amazing to see him find happiness in future installments, which he absolutely deserves after his role in “The Last Temptation of Jerry”.
