WhileSmokeis inspired by real events, the show’s present-day setting and fictionalized dramatization opens the door for plenty of wild, unpredictable events to unfold. This includes more arson attacks from Dave as he keeps trying to feel in control of other facets of his life. However, one big decision he made in episode 4 could spell his doom.

At the end of episode 4, Dave has a fight with Ashley after he forgets to pick Emmett up when he was asked to. When Dave is about to commit another arson attack on a supermarket to vent his frustration, he’s noticed by a woman who comments on his outfit. It doesn’t take long for sparks to fly.
She ends up bringing Dave back to her place, where they engage in BDSM roleplay. While she’s tied to the bed, however, he decides to push things a little further than she’s used to. He ends up lighting her stomach on fire, blowing it out after a few seconds, not leaving any burns because of how he administered the flame.
By being so open about his affinity for fire with someone he doesn’t really know, Dave is risking his identity as an arsonist.
At first, she’s shocked that he tried doing something so dangerous. However, when she realizes she’s unharmed, she seems on board with what he’d done. WhileMichelle thinks Dave is the arsonistthey’re looking for, and he’s actively hiding from her, he’s being much more open with this random person he’s cheating on Ashley with.

His arson attacks are clearly an outlet for his frustration in his regular life, but if he’s not careful, he’s going to get caught. Whilehe seemingly suspects Michelle knows, he’s been good at keeping her guessing.
But, when it comes to this new affair, he has an attachment to someone he’s only just met, and who could discover his real motives if he’s not careful. Showing her he’s associated with fire has already madeSmoke’s core arsonist more susceptible to being caught. If this keeps up, his hubris will be his downfall.
