It’s rare anymore that battle royale games launch in relative obscurity and grow more popular organically, but such is the case withSpellbreak. Developed by indie studio Proletariat, the free-to-play battle royale launched on September 3 across all major platforms. And despite little in the way of marketing,Spellbreakis already becoming one of the fastest-growing games on Twitch, with more than 40,000 concurrent viewers at its peak.

Starting September 3,Spellbreak’s viewership on Twitch started in low numbers. But in the days since has been picked up and played by many ofTwitch’s most popular streamers. DrLupo alone is currently streamingSpellbreakto over 10,000 viewers. Other streamers from the past week include Sodapoppin, Lirik, and competitive gamers like A_Seagull. At the rate it’s going,Spellbreakcould become one of the most-viewed games on Twitch before too long.

Proletariat appears to be seeing similar trends, itself. The studio released some early information aboutSpellbreakon Twitter this past Tuesday. That information confirmed thatSpellbreakalready had 2 million total players, as well as 1.7 million hours watched on Twitch. Odds are that number has rapidly increased for thebattle royaleeven in the past few days.

What’s especially exciting aboutSpellbreakis that battle royale is just the start of Proletariat’s plans. It’s just the first mode that the studio planned to make, as it’s well-suited forSpellbreak’s fast-paced and frantic gameplay. The studio is planning on adding a diverse range of other modes in the future. Of course, if the battle royale mode takes off then Proletariat may reconsider that. The battle royale clearly has a tone of room to grow in exciting new ways. It’s going to be fun watchingSpellbreakgoing forward.

Spellbreakis available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
