Despite its immense popularity, theFalloutfranchise has been seemingly dormant, without a new mainline game or remaster in over ten years. The interest is still clearly there, especially after the success of the Amazon Prime series. It’s odd that Bethesda has done so little with the franchise, although it does seem there are plans to remaster some of the older titles.

After the success ofOblivion Remastered, it seems like Bethesda has turned its attention to remasteredFallout 3next, likely with Virtuos doing most of the work again, but even this is a while away.Falloutfans have grown impatient, although this impatience has been expressed in impressively creative ways.Fallout: Londonwas one example of this, releasing last year and blowing minds, andFallout: Bakersfieldlooks like the next project to set an impossible standard.

Fallout: Bakersfield Is A Stunning Total Conversion Of DOOM

And Looks So Good It Could Be Official

Fallout: Bakersfieldis a total conversion mod for 1993’sDoomthat makes it look like Bethesda themselves commissioned a studio to create aFallout-inspired Boomer Shooter. What makes this reveal so shocking is that before the trailer was dropped onSaurX’s YouTube channel, very little had been shown off about the project. It had largely remained quiet after its initial announcement, but the new trailer shows off all the work the team has been doing.

Boomer Shooters are a subgenre of shooters and refer to games made in the retro style inspired by games like the originalDoomandDuke Nukem.

Fallout Franchise Tag Page Cover Art

Bakersfieldbrings the world ofFallouttoDoom’s gameplay, and the aesthetic fits well, considering thatFalloutwas a great CRPG series back in the 90s. In fact,Bakersfieldincorporates many aesthetic elements from the originalFallout, including some of its UI and asomewhat pre-rendered look with 3D models, paired with some great pixel art.The aesthetic fits so well that it’s a wonder that Bethesda hasn’t made its own Boomer-Shooterin theFalloutuniverse.

Considering that Bethesda is also the publisher of theDoomfranchise, this seems like a match made in heaven, andBakersfieldis somehow the first to capitalize on it. From ghouls to super mutants, the team behindBakersfieldclearly understands how to translate the post-apocalypse ofFalloutinto an all-action shooter likeDoom. The super mutant boss in the trailer even sounds straight out of the originalFallout.

At the end of the trailer, the team gives a progress report, and while a release date hasn’t been revealed, the overall progress of the project is at 60%. It seems most of the environment is done, with walls/tiles and scenery both at 80%, while creatures, weapons, and UI need a bit more work. For a project with a development team of two, what has been shown thus far is both impressive and carries on a trend from theFalloutcommunity.

Fallout: Bakersfield Is Just One Example Of What Bethesda’s Fans Can Do

Fallout: London, Miami, And So On

Bethesda fans have been known for their modding projects for some time now, and players only need to look at what a heavily moddedSkyrimlooks like in 2025 to comprehend how much work they have done. TheFalloutside of the fan base seems more focused on the total conversionside.Bakersfield, although unorthodox due to its work with an entirely different game, is just one example of a successful conversion project.

Total conversion mods are projects that use the original game’s engine and mechanics but put players in a brand new setting built from the ground up.

Fallout: Londonis a notable example, thanks to its open-world design, which allows players to explore a post-apocalyptic and irradiated London. There are plenty of in-progress projects, too, likeProject Mojave, where fans have gotten sick of waiting for aNew Vegasremakeand have taken matters into their own hands. There’s alsoFallout: Cascadia, which seeks to bring Seattle to the world ofFallout.

Anothergreat example of a conversion project isFallout: Miami, and while it isn’t as far along asLondon, it does have some episodic sections to download. Its progress can be monitored on theFallout: Miamiwebsite, where the team posts updates on their progress. Most of the 2D art has been completed, and it seems that between now and the release ofFallout 5, there will be plenty of fan-made projects likeMiami, London, andBakersfieldto enjoy.

On theSkyrimside of the community, there is theambitiousBeyond Skyrimproject, which currently offers the Brumaarea in Cyrodiil fordownload. This projectaims to makeSkyrima continental game, and that’s without considering all the other expansion mods that have been released so far, such asWyrmstooth. WhileFallout 4’s scene is largely aboutexpanding the game,Skyrim’s is all about expanding the universe.

Projects Like Bakersfield Are Perfect For The Wait For Fallout 5

And Bethesda Has Welcomed These Projects

Fallout 5is so far down the pipeline that it’s almost not worth thinking about. At times, it feels like the heat death of the universe or the Rapture might happen first,so projects likeBakersfieldare great for keeping interest in theFalloutcommunity, else this gaming IP won’t have any games. Bethesda probably knows this, and its handling of the modding scene is one of its highlights.

There was thenext-gen update scare withFallout: Londonand some controversy over the Creation Club, but for the most part,Bethesda lets its community get on with its work largely unimpeded. With the Creation Kits, it even gives its fans the tools they need to create something great, and they have been doing that for well over a decade. I personally cannot wait for projects likeBakersfield, Miami, andBeyond Skryimto finally be released.

In the meantime, fans will have to play the ever-familiar waiting game in theFalloutseries. Still, there are new games and projects on the horizon, even if Bethesda isn’t the one releasing them. With the series too and a potentialFallout 3remake,it could be a worse time to be aFalloutfan.
