Superman’s Biology Undergoes a Radical Change
Superman’s Kryptonite Powers Tend to Be His Most Extreme
While the most famous type of Kryptonite is the poisonous Green Kryptonite,Supermanlore is full of different types, often with a focus on altering his body in extreme ways. The Kryptonite Spectrumis a clear love letter to Superman’s Silver Age stories, where substances like Red Kryptonite would totally transform him, turning him into a half-insect or causing his hair and nails to grow uncontrollably.
That spirit is kept alive by turning Superman into a giant, with Cobalt Kryptonite altering his biology so that solar energy causes him to grow larger and larger. While this power isn’t innate to Superman, hedoeshave the Cobalt Kryptonite in his possession, meaning it’s something he’ll be able to trigger should the occasion call for it. This is something the Superman-Family have done before, such asSupergirl using Red Kryptoniteto gain fiery wings in the acclaimedSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, from Tom King and Bilquis Evely.

While adaptations often treat Superman’s powers as a fixed list of abilities that never change, comics lore tells a very different story, and the Man of Steel often discovers new ways to manifest his powers, fromhis ‘super flare’ abilityto being able to control electricity.Supermanfans can expect more wild powers asSuperman: The Kryptonite Spectrumcontinues, with Speckled Kryptonite and Rainbow Kryptonite still to reveal their unique powers.
Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1is available now, withSuperman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #2coming July 13, 2025.
