Criminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3 has provided a great look at a very different Voit (Zach Gilford), but part of his involvement in the latest episode makes no sense. In season 3, episode 7, Voit is brought into the field by the Behavioral Analysis Team when the season’s unsub baits them into it. This particular case calls back to a particular signature of Voit’s that involves the Sicarius spider, which gave Voit the name Sicarius.
Voit’s time in the field is particularly disturbing for him. With his newfound sense of empathy as a result of his brain injury, Voit has been having trouble dealing with the horrible actions of his past, and working with the BAU now is his attempt to do the right thing. That does not mean doing the right thing has been easy for him, andthe ending of “…All The Devils Are Here”makes that very clear.

Garcia Caring For Voit After Their Ordeal Was The Most Touching Part Of The Episode
The Scene Is A Reminder Of Garcia’s Well Of Empathy
Though “…All The Devils Are Here” offers a particularly dark look at Voit’s past, it also offers a sweet moment for Voit. During the episode, Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness) is plagued by the idea of the Sicarius spiders and their venom, and she repeatedly wants to cleanse her own space by burning sage or using essential oils, but is not supposed to do that in the FBI office. At the end of the episode, she takes her cleansing methods to Voit.
Voit and Garcia meet at the hospital, where she places her essential oils between them. While Voit tells her the smell is strong, he also goes along with Garcia’s flow, appreciating her attempt to cleanse the day. It’s a sweet gesture from Garcia, who is able to see the good in just about everyone. She might not entirely understand Voit, but she wants to help him make a turn for the better. It’s touching to see her aid in Voit becoming a better person and offer him encouragement, bringing a bright spot to an otherwise very dark episode.

Dr. Ochoa Should Have Been The One Helping Voit In The Aftermath
Her Presence Is Missed In Episode 7
…it’s strange not to see her unpacking the way Voit feels about being out in the field with the BAU.
While Garcia helping Voit atthe end ofCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3, episode 7and seeing the good in him is very sweet, it also makes an odd turn for the episode without his doctor there. Up to this point, Dr. Ochoa (Aimee Garcia) has been there for every step of Voit’s recovery because it’s been a very delicate process. As a neuropsychiatrist, she is the only one who is truly an expert on Voit’s recovery.

She has often been there to pull the BAU back when their probing of Voit’s memories goes too far. She has also been there to help Voit with his feelings about the memories that have surfaced, so it’s strange not to see her unpacking the way Voit feels about being out in the field with the BAU.It’s especially strange since Dr. Ochoa previously accompanied Voit to the FBI officeswhen he was there for the interrogation of a suspect.
It stands to reason that the only reason Dr. Ochoa is not there to work with Voit is because, for some reason, Aimee Garcia could not be in the episode, whether for budgetary or scheduling reasons. It clashes with the earlier story for her character this season, though.
It Makes No Sense That Dr. Ochoa Wasn’t Consulted About Bringing Voit Into The Field
Dr. Ochoa Has Been There For Every Previous Immersion Into Voit’s Past
Dr. Ochoa not being there for Voit to discuss what happened in the field can easily be written off as involving an active FBI investigation that she is not allowed to know all of the details for. The situation also allows for more bonding between Garcia and Gregory, which has been a welcome addition to the season. What makes the least amount of sense is actually thatAimee Garcia’s Dr. Ochoais not consulted about bringing Voit into the field at all.
The BAU team discusses whether taking Voit into the field is a good idea because of their unsub, but we never see them asking Dr. Ochoa about whether it’s a good idea for Voit.Dr. Ochoa has been so cautious about pushing Voit too far, too fast, but here, she is nowhere to be seen. While Voit has a lot of his memories back, we do not yet know if he really does remember everything, or if there might still be traumatic elements from his past that could cause more damage to him than they offer up help to the team.
It seems like a missed opportunity to not have Dr. Ochoa address just what exactly Voit would have been walking into when he joined the BAU team in the field inCriminal Minds: Evolutionseason 3’s episode 7.
