Warning: SPOILERS ahead forFBIseason 7, episode 22, “A New Day.“Life hangs in the balance at the close ofFBIseason 7, and the fallout could be devastating for fans who have long wanted to see two major characters paired together romantically. TheFBIseason 7 finalewreaks havoc on the team at 26 Fed, forcing the main characters to work from the shadows after realizing the terrorist group Forefront has managed to infiltrate the FBI in order to further their Chinese interests. The fallout from this apparent betrayal is extreme, and the threat remains far from neutralized heading intoFBIseason 8.
But not all the majorunanswered questions fromFBIseason 7necessarily relate to the ongoing case at hand. The fact that Forefront appears to be moving more aggressively will certainly have a major impact, but fans with a long-time investment in the show are also naturally curious about developments in the characters' personal lives. For instance, how will Isobel’s (Alana de la Garza) decision not to retire affect her marriagein the wake of everything currently happening? Because, although not all may have realized it, Isobel’s future may have unintended consequences for another potential romance.

FBI Season 7 Ends With Isobel In The Clutches Of Death
Isobel Survived An Explosion Just To Collapse At The End
The introduction ofIsobel’s husband Philip (Arthur Ward) inFBIappeared at first to be setting up her retirement, but her decision to stay with the feds could now have consequences for Phillip, as Isobel collapses with no pulse in the aftermath of catching the traitor responsible for the attack on the Bureau. Although there had already been talk of Alana de la Garza possibly leaving the show after Castille’s retirement was first discussed, her departure now seems more plausible than ever.
Even surviving the attack could ultimately lead to Isobel’s retirement. Phillip supported her decision to continue chasing bad guys, but watching his wife nearly die could change this. Additionally,Isobel had already suggested issues with work-life balance before she was up for retirement in the first place, and a near-death experience could be the jolt she needsto reassess where that balance currently stands. Dead or alive, however, Isobel’s exit from the Bureau would set off a chain reaction affecting at least a handful of characters.

Jubal’s Career Future Was Even Mentioned In The Season 7 Finale
Even fans who consider Isobel their least favorite character probably can’t find anything assailable enough about her to suggest that her death would be a good thing, but Castille dying or retiring could pave the way forJubal’s (Jeremy Sisto) promotion inFBI. While it had already been mentioned,it’s reiterated in theFBIseason 7 finale that Jubal previously applied for Isobel’s job and was turned down. That’s one of the main reasons he was initially a key suspect in Forefront’s infiltration of the Bureau.
Jubal may not be in the running for the SAC position yet, however. While Isobel is likely to speak on his behalf, the attempt on her life could suggest traitors still lurk in the halls of 26 Fed. His past was a hindrance to his career path even before he was suspected. But if Jubal does get promoted, somebody else would have to step into Jubal’s current position as ASAC. They could always hire someone from one ofFBI’s canceled spinoffs, but promoting from within could prove controversial with some fans.

Maggie And OA Can’t Be Together In FBI If Either One Gets Promoted
They Could Be Forced Apart Before They Even Get Together
As the two most central agents inFBI, it would make sense for either Maggie (Missy Peregrym) or OA (Zeeko Zaki) to step into Jubal’s shoes if he were to get promoted. Unfortunately, putting one in a position of superiority over the other would create ethical concerns about pursuing a romance. MostDick Wolf TV showsoutside theOne Chicagouniverse don’t necessarily make relationship arcs a primary focus, but the chemistry between Maggie and OA has strengthened throughout season 7, particularly after he brought her back from the brink following a nearly fatal drone strike.
There’s no certainty that Maggie or OA would make ASAC, and there’d be something almost poetically comical if the series were to promote Scola (John Boyd) right after he’s finally found a partner who seems like she might stick around for the long haul. But evenFBIfans who care little about the Maggie/OA ship could be less than thrilled to see their professional partnership broken up if one were to climb the ranks. If Isobel’s time at the Bureau does come to an end, it could be difficult to handle her departure in a way that pleases all fans equally.
