The acclaimed manga seriesVinland Sagais coming to an end sooner rather than later, according to series creator Makoto Yukimura. In a post onYukimura’s personal X account, the creator took time to celebrate his series' 20th anniversary while also confirming the series is close to its ending. With 218 chapters chronicling Thorfinn’s journey to find the mythical Vinland, a place of supreme peace, fans are certainly waiting for the series' conclusion with bated breath.
In the post to X, Yukimura expresses that he didn’t expect the seminal Viking manga to last 10 years, let alone 20. The mangaka takes time to thank his fans for their support over the years, as he believes it is only with intense fan support thatVinland Sagahas avoided cancellation.

20 years! When I began, I didn’t expect to draw this manga for so long. I thought it would last 10 years. The schedule I anticipated has lasted twice as long. [Vinland Saga] wasn’t canceled as I was really supported by all its readers. Thank you very much. But now, the final episode is near.
Yukimura then ends the post by stating in no uncertain terms that the manga is nearing its end, so fans should be prepared.

Vinland Saga’s Ending Will Finally Conclude One Of Seinen Manga’s Most Beloved Tales
The Series Is One Of The Biggest Seinen Manga
Commonly regarded as one of the biggest Seinen manga of all time,Vinland Sagastands head and shoulders with the genre’s two other giants,BerserkandVagabond. All three series share more than a little in common, as they are each about violent people learning to let go of their anger in order to embrace a more peaceful lifestyle.
However,Vinland Sagaending would set it apart from the other two. WhileBerserkis still continuing under the stewardship of Koji Mori, the series' production was halted by theuntimely passing of series creator Kentaro Miura. Meanwhile,Vagabondwas put on an indefinite hiatusdue to series creator Takehiko Inoue’s high standards for his own art. All of this adds up to Yukimura’sVinland Sagabeing the first of the three Seinen greats to make it over the finish line. With any luck, it won’t be the last.
How Will Vinland Saga End?
History Points To A Potentially Grim Ending
Currently,Vinland Sagais in the middle of itsThousand Year Voyagearc that is testing Thorfinn’s pacifistic ideals like never before. Though fans might have hope that the series will have a happy ending, history suggests otherwise. The real-life man Thorfinn is based on, Thorfinn Karlsefni, died at around 27 after leaving America. ThoughVinland Sagais more akin to historical fiction than a true recount of history, and there is always a possibility that Yukimura will invent a new fate for his version of Thorfinn, Thorfinn will likely die young like his historical counterpart.
Regardless of Thorfinn’s final fate though, what’s clear is thatVinland Sagahas left a massive impact. ThoughYukimura might be surprised by the popularity of Thorfinn’s famous “I have no enemies” speech, it and many moments like it have truly captured the hearts of fans across the globe. Given this and the strength of the manga in general, there is little doubt that Makoto Yukimura will stickVinland Saga’sending.
