The Flashactor Grant Gustin finally opens up about the famous ArrowverseDCgravestone meme going viral. It has been more than two years sinceThe FlashTV castbrought the beloved Arrowverse series to an end,but The CW superhero drama continues to be celebrated to this day by fans all over the world.
One of the most memorable moments for Gustin’s Arrowverse hero was when theArrowseries finale was produced, which led to the release of one of the memorable moments to go viral with not just fans of the franchise, but pop culture in general.A photo was released with Gustin posing in front of Oliver Queen’s gravestone, which continues to be used to this day.

During a recent Fan Expo event (courtesy of theBarry & IrisYouTube channel),Gustin was finally asked about the Arrowverse gravestone meme becoming as popular as it has, five years after the post was initially shared. Gustin shared what some of his favorite ones are that have been created from the Arrowverse photo, as he shared the following:
Moderator: What is your favorite caption that has been attached to that meme?

Grant Gustin: Well, there’s been some captions attached to it [that] I wish weren’t attached to it. But I don’t know, I feel like sports-related ones are always funnier to me, because I’m a sports guy. Like whenever someone’s been eliminated from the playoffs when it’s a team I don’t like, at least. But I don’t know, for a while there, it was sent to me once a week.
Moderator: Who made you aware of this meme the first time?

Grant Gustin: Oh, I don’t remember, it’s sent to me by people I’m hearing from for the first time in a couple of years. [Because] it reaches different corners of like suddenly someone sees the meme because it’s about something they care about. It’s touched every corner of the Internet, I feel like. I mean, I have joked about when I die, that will be on my tombstone. I feel like I’m more famous for that than-
Tom Cavanagh: We’ll take care of that!
What Grant Gustin’s Reaction To Arrowverse Gravestone Meme Going Viral Means
It’s fair to say that Gustin was likely not expecting that photo to become as popular as it did when it was shared after theArrowseries finale, but that is the power of the Internet. As this Arrowverse crossover moment came off right afterCrisis on Infinite Earths, the fandom definitely needed a laugh after Oliver’s death.
To Gustin’s point, the fact that the Arrowverse gravestone meme has been able to be used in a non-DC context is one of the many reasons why it is as popular as it is. Even now, withthe Arrowverse franchisebeing over after December 2024, this photo is one of many things to continue to keep that brand in pop culture conversations.
Even with fans who may have never seen a single episode of any Arrowverse TV shows, the meme can be used for any franchise or context, which makes the usage even funnier. That is why it’s great to finally hear Gustin getting to give his two cents on it.
