The creators of the Netflix hitWednesdayconfirm that one character will not return. After an almost three-year hiatus between seasons, new episodes ofWednesdayare available to stream on Netflix. The teen horror hit is split into two parts, with the second half ofWednesdayseason 2 arriving on September 3.

Xavier Thorpe looking serious in Wednesday season 1

Most ofthe supportingWednesdaycastis back, once again sharing the screen with lead star and producer Jenna Ortega. Percy Hynes White, however, does not reprise his role as Xavier Thorpe. Instead, the character is given an off-camera goodbye via a letter that Wednesday reads in the premiere episode.

In an interview withTVLine, co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar confirmed that viewers have seen the last of Xavier. In the quote below, Gough talks about the fact that Xavier is at the European boarding school, Reichenbach, which was mentioned in season 1:

Gough: “We have seen the last of him. [Xavier] is at a boarding school we mentioned in Season 1, Reichenbach, which is like the European version of Nevermore.”

What This Means For Wednesday

White exitedWednesdayamid allegations that he committed sexual assault. The actor responded to the since-deleted accusations in an Instagram post, denying wrongdoing.Wednesdayseason 2 quickly addresses Xavier’s absence. The titular Wednesday returns to her dorm to find a note from her former friend, helping to set up her next mystery.

The ending ofWednesdayseason 1does set up Xavier to have a potentially bigger role, with the character giving Wednesday a cellphone. The season 2 debut acknowledges that this gift is short-lived, with Wednesday not responding to Xavier’s texts. There is still the potential of romance between Wednesday and Tyler (Hunter Doohan), which comes with an added element of danger.

There’s also the friendship between Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers), which is as crucial as ever bythe end ofWednesdayseason 2, part 1. Still, in interviews, Ortega has said that the new episodes will lean more into horror and less into the romantic love triangles of the show’s debut year.

It is common, even without the behind-the-scenes controversy, for characters to shift and change from one season to the next.Wednesdaytakes the time to write out Xavier, letting him push the story forward, while also allowing space for the fact that Ortega’s character could move on from a boy that she knew only briefly.
