Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 3.Dexter: Resurrectionepisode 3 featured the long-awaited return of Vince Masuka (C.S. Lee) and Joey Quinn (Desmond Harrington), but it wasn’t clear why Angel Batista (David Zayas) didn’t tell them about Dexter. There are severalreturningDextercharacters inResurrection, and most of them have a history with Dexter himself. In Masuka and Quinn’s case, they were actually friends of Dexter’s, but they still don’t know the truth about him.

ByResurrectionepisode 3, it’s clear that Batista is suspicious of Dexter and thinks he really is the Bay Harbor Butcher. Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) told him at theend ofNew Blood, and now Batista is even keeping tabs on where Dexter is going. Despite his obvious suspicions, Batista only told Masuka and Quinn that he was dealing with a personal problem and nothing more.

Batista Wants To Have Conclusive Evidence About Dexter Being The Bay Harbor Butcher Before Telling Quinn & Masuka

The simplest reason Batista didn’t tell Masuka and Quinn about the possibility of Dexter being the Bay Harbor Butcher is because he can’t prove it. Right now, all Batista has is a lot of speculative and circumstantial evidence. Dexter’s ex-girlfriend accused him, he faked his own death, Maria LaGuerta also suspected him, and a few other things. That’s a far cry from DNA evidence or a witness.

Batista needs to verify that when he does accuse Dexter of being a serial killer it finally sticks. The last two Miami Metro detectives who suspected Dexter - Maria and James Doakes - both wound up dead, and one of them had his legacy destroyed forever. Everyone thought they were crazy when they suspected Dexter, and Batista knows better than to repeat their mistakes.

There also may be a bit of sentimentality at play. Batista is clearly suspicious of Dexter and knows that he’s the Bay Harbor Butcher, but he was also friends with Dexter. There may be some small part of Batista that wants Angela and Maria to be wrong and for Dexter to be innocent. He may be holding off on accusing Dexter until there’s no denying that he’s a killer.

Will Batista Actually Find Proof That Dexter Is The Bay Harbor Butcher?

Batista Probably Won’t Find Solid Evidence, But His Suspicions Of Dexter Won’t Just Go Away

It’s clear that Batista is looking for more evidence on Dexter before he does anything else inResurrection. What isn’t as clear is whether he’ll actually find any proof that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. If I were a betting man, however, I would say thatBatista probably won’t find definitive proof that Dexter is a serial killer inResurrection.

The biggest reason I feel that Batista won’t prove Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher is because it’s too similar toNew Blood. We just did a story about Dexter’s cover being blown; doing it again would feel tired. Plus, the entire conceit ofResurrectionis that it’s a return to theDexterformula of him outfoxing the police. Being caught would completely undo the symbolic rebirth the series is based on.

Batista has a lot of skin in this game, and he’s not letting Dexter get away with it a third time.

That being said, there is still a chance that Batista will be able to prove Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. If Batista gets proof, Dexter may be forced to kill him to stay free. That would work withResurrection’s theme of rebirth, and getting rid of Batista would effectively be Dexter’s way of leaving the past behind him. I don’t think that would go over well, though, soResurrectionwill probably avoid it.

Even if Batista doesn’t find proof, however, he’s not just going to let Dexter go. Batista knows Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher, and he knows that he’s the only chance of proving Maria was right. Batista has a lot of skin in this game, and he’s not letting Dexter get away with it a third time. Dexter and Batista’s rivalry inDexter: Resurrectionis shaping up to be absolutely enthralling.
